Then why don't Christians have to make burnt offerings unto the Lord? That's part of the law. Why don't they stone people who work on the sabbath? Or disobiedient children?
Also, God hating homosexuals is under question. The passages appear to be referencing ritual sin in Leviticus when it talks about men with mankind. The www.religioustolerance.org cite given further up this thread indicates that the Hebrew word for ritual sin is used in the homosexual reference instead of the Hebrew word for physical sin used in other sexual liaison prohibition statements in Levitican law.
Jesus said that he was a new covenant. And you really can't consider Jesus and God as seperate entities. Fundies consider Jesus and God as seperate entities so that they can justify why their God is the only one. They just don't see the ingrained hypocricy of that when taken in context with the 10 Commandments prohibition against having other Gods before Him and the absolute divinity ascribed to Jesus. |

Just talked to a friend who runs a private abattior and made arraingments for 1/2 of a small hog, including the head. It'll weigh maybe forty or fifty pounds, all in. I'll pick it up in a few days and butcher it at my younger daughter's house. The parts, shoulder, ham, belly, and spareribs that won't be used for Christmas dinner will be portioned and spread out through the family. I myself, will take the head -- yeah, yeah, I know. It's disgusting.
I'm going to start the stock this weekend. Whilst it's working, I'll clean and sharpen my knives. The stock will go in the freezer until it's time for the kids to start working on dinner.
Christmas is a such a good thing!

Thanks for getting this thread back on track, filthy. I know it's hypocritical of me, but dammit Christmas is a good thing. The adults in my family stopped exchanging presents years ago, and it's actually nicer that way. For us, Christmas is about happy children, delicious food, and good company.
BTW, that whole hog thing - Oh, yeah, it's GROSS! Enjoy!

The head is the most useful part; ears, snout and tongue for souse, the brains for brain pie and brains & eggs, and the cheeks will be marinated in a spiced brine, then go into the smoker to make jowl bacon. If I were more ambitious, I'd get a couple more heads and make head cheese -- has this ol' country boy turned any stomachs yet?
The gifts we exchange are small ones; little more than tokens, really. If there's a need during the year, we cover it when it comes up, rather than 'wait 'till Christmas.' We're a pretty close family.
Well, everybody pretty much knows my plans for a Christmas pig (literally) out. Whadda y'all got goin'?

That is gross... I don't know why I'm reminded of that movie... Night of the Living Dead, wasn't it? With all those brain-eating zombies?
Anyways, it's confirmed: only mom and I, this Christmas. Sister's going to her mother-in-law's place with her husband, and I've no further family. So we're having a nice, light, fat-free dinner late at night (a dinner I can't translate - and my dictionaries seem to have vanished outta sight), and lots of gift-less family love. |

Extensive use of brains as food started, in this country, during the great depression. Prior to that, they were 'slave food' then mainly eaten by share-croppers and the like. The same for maws and chitterlings, feet and so forth. The thing is that these items are delicious when properly done.
By the way, you don't really need a head to make hog head cheese. I do it that way because it's the way my grandmother did it. You can use a shoulder and other bits, and get pretty much the same thing.
Wasn't it Mark Twain who once wrote something to the efect that the pig is the most worthy animal because the only thing you don't use is the squeal?

Possibly... yeah, we use the feet, tail and some other parts for a traditional brazillian dish. Brains, too, for other stuff. It was slave food, here, too. Nevertheless, it's still gross |

Of course, we only do the gift thing on the 25th. Getting my wife a truly crappy horror film for a stocking-stuffer has become a tradition. And for us, it's "spend all day in our pajamas" day (mandatory). We play a lot of board games. |

Well my friends, I am off to pick up the hog side and make some meat. Knives are razor sharp and my bone saw has a new blade. None the less, I am not a professional butcher and therefore am in for a long and somewhat messy afternoon.
I have already dropped off the frozen stock and it's ready to go. Just add flour and heat 'er up. It smells so good that it could hurt you!
I'll get back when the cuttin's done.

Klausjagen. Now here's a holiday celebration I can get behind:

Man, what a crown roast! What! A! Crown! Roast!! Damn, but can't my younger kid cook!
We got lucky. Things were slow at the abattoir and Jason let us do the cutting there. He has that wonder of modern science; a bandsaw, and he let us use it. I built the roast -- did I mention how good that thing was? -- and then we cut the ham into thick steaks. We boned out the shoulder and made two small, rolled roasts. All was wrapped in butcher's paper and is now divvied up in the family. The whole thing only took a couple of hours. The jowls are in brine and a batch of souse will be started today.
The only down side was that the grands didn't get to watch a cursing, sweating Poppa dismember a medium-large, dead animal in the kitchen (it was cold and raining outside).
But I think now I'll quit eating for a couple of days. It'll take that long to digest the overindulgance I commited yesterday.
Again wishing all the best!

Aha! My sister took a picture of our christmas table. I'm waiting for her to bring the camera plus cable so I can show you all how my measly, 4-people brazillian family eat. Not a lot of food (we're only for, damnit, three girls, two of which dieting, and a man), but can my mother cook... |
