"Nope, he's right. Humanity got themselves into this, humanity will have to get itself out."
The way out at this point will be nasty, but necessary. I've been accused of being overly empathetic- a "60's Throwback" by a Republican friend, but there are times when there are only choices between evil options. One of the purposes of punishment is to see justice for the victims of crime, and another is to deter others from committing similar acts. Whether strong retaliatory action is necessary against the responsible groups, and the nations that support them- for both reasons- is beyond debate. The leaders of these groups are thugs- they laugh at diplomacy, and have no regard for life, other than when it serves their interests. They love nations who take a "psychoanalytic" approach with them, and view those as pathetically weak, ridiculous fools. Remember the hostage crisis under Carter? Ever wonder why the Soviets never had trouble with that kind of thing? A few Russians WERE kidnapped and killed over there- ONCE. The Soviets promptly determined the leader of those responsible, found his brother, and killed him… hung him upside-down, cut his testicles off and put them in his mouth… heinous, but apparently the Islamic terrorists got the message early in the game… they never bothered the Russians again. How many lives of their citizens did the Russians save by this ugly act? Osama says that killing him will make no difference, because "many more Osamas will be born." Undoubtedly true, but these guys aren't super-human commandos… terrorists of the mentality demonstrated, and the nations that endorse their actions just have to be dealt with in languages they understand. During World War II, the Japanese were tough and determined, too- but they understood the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, and horrible though they were, many lives were saved.
