Sounds nice in theory. However, in practice the US cannot bomb anyone it wants whenever it wants. Nor can it invade. There have already been stern warnings to the US about invading a muslim nation. Ego is not going to be ebough I'm afraid. We are going to have to get cooperation because idle threats don't do diddly.

The only stern warnings I have heard about came from Afganistan's Taliban (The Northern Alliance has invited us in but warned us about going too far. IE punishing civilians for the Taliban.) and Iraq's Hussein. Both harbor international terrorism. All other Muslim countries have backed us taking out the terrorists with a minimization of civilian casualites. The most warnings have been about starting a war against Islam. Our foriegn policy and President has been very careful to stress that our fight is with terrorists, not Islam. There could be unilateral military action taken by the US, but it would be ill-advised. This administration is not extremely stupid and has been careful to get diplomatic solutions where it could.

Some of the policies I have seen that are to be changed involve banking. This is one that Republicans have blocked for years but suddenly they see the light and something will be done. Cutting off funding is an extremely effective tool for fighting terrorism in my opinion. Too bad it took so many deaths to get somewhere on this.

Just a small lesson from history. Nevil Chamberlin's diplomacy didn't do diddly. It took bombs and blood to stop the Naxis.

I thought we weren't using history as an example LOL
But seriously, invading Afghanistan would have to be the stupidest thing the US could do. I'm betting that never happens. Maybe we send teams of specialists in, but in my opinion sending more than that is 1. unnecessary and 2. bound to cause more trouble than what led us to do it in the first place.

Kaptain K, If I received the call today asking me to report for duty, well I'd be on the first plane I could get to my duty station.
Yeah, now is the time for action against the terrorists responsible and rhetoric should be put on hold. I quite agree with rubysue in her politically incorrect post. The US can not be seen to be soft on terrorism, we have to go in with a clear objective, tho I haven't exactly seen a clear objective other than erradicating terrorism.
We should/must use all weapons at our disposal including cutting off their money and their support by governments.

Well, at least I wouldn't have to get on a plane to get to my duty station, but I doubt I'll get called. The only people I've heard that have been recalled from retirement are doctors. I got an e-mail from a friend worried about a recall. I put it to him this way: Back in 99 a bunch of us were sitting in Saudi Arabia. Then Bosnia blew up, and a bunch more were deployed from our unit. This left only a handful of people to provide communications for the base, plus radar and radio for eight other airfields. At this time, there are a significant number from the unit already deployed. Should Ellsworth deploy for this crisis, it's going to be 1999, part II. While I won't be recalled, it won't kill me to volunteer some of my time. If I man the phones, fix radios, or do a couple of PA setups, maybe someone will get to have a nice long lunch with the spouse and kids. I've done the 12hrs a day, 7 days a week bit, with no end in sight. It's stressful, and I would have loved for someone to spell me for a couple of hours. Lisa

The likelihood of my being recalled is slim to none since I'm out of an MOS. There aren't anymore A-6s in the Corps. Yeah, I remember my first 120 hour day when we [MAG 70] got our stand up orders. (I was attached to Group for various reasons at that time.) I'm just wondering if they're blowing the dust off the boxes and supplying MAG 70 with personnel, SWA is their Theater of Operations. But if they call, I'm ready.

Hope that you didn't lose too much Money, on that Bet @tomic. According to CNN, we could launch a Ground Offensive, as early as this Week.
I can just hear the Screaming Eagles, polishing their Talons. As they say, "For Those That Fought For It, Freedom Has a Taste And A Meaning, The Protected Will Never Know." Brave Human Beings, that's for sure!

No Zaphod, from what I've heard the ground troops are Rangers etc and not a full invasion. I think my money looks safe.

I'll weigh in with @tomic, Zaphod. A conventional ground war is just what the Taliban wants. Why give it to 'em? There are about 45,000 in the U.S. military trained in special operations. The British SAS is also itching to jump in.
It has to be depressing for a Taliban figher who is trained to kill the enemy in daylight to be blown away by spooks wearing night vision goggles and sophisticated weeapons. With one quick burst he finds himself in Paradise, minus the virgins, milk and honey and satellite TV.
"Abdul. What are you doing here?" "I don't know Mohammed. I was fast asleep, dreaming of glory and then the Spawn of Satan blew my head off in the dead of night. Truely, they are bastards."
Nighty-night, Taliban!

Yeah, you're probably right. But, there will at least be Occupation Troops, at least until the Afghani, Nascent, Government in Exile, figures itself out. BTW, the following, DOES Remind me of something.

If there's an Afterlife, it's just gotta be REAL, Boring, to be a Soldier. Half of the guys that you meet, end every Sentence with, "Killed in Action, Sir!"
At the very least, it would put a face on the Carnage, that is Warfare. Speaking of which, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, is trying to put a Face on Each and Every One, of the Heroes Immortilized on the Vietnam Memorial. So, if any of you have a friend, or a relative, who is on the Wall, please check out the following link: Put a Face with a Name Thank You.
