First of all, I apologize if it's obnoxious or pushy of me to push a new topic on everyone when I've only been a member a few days. It's just something I found that I thought was really fascinating, and I'm extremely happy to have found some people to share it with.

If anyone's interested in a study on how 'open-minded' believers in pseudoscience really are, or you just want a good read, I highly recommend Professor Michael Dambrun's "The Dark Side of the Stars", available (in PDF) on this page;

The study draws a corollary between prejudice and belief in astrology. How about that, and they always claim to be such nice people!

I look forward to any comments and feedback. I'd especially like to know if anyone has seen any similar research or evidence, thanks!

It makes sense that persons likely to be prejudiced have certain thought processes that also make them likely to believe in other "narrow minded" things if I may use that description. I'm not sure the researchers did much to support their causal relation conclusion as opposed to mere association, though.

Hi Geordie, and welcome to SFN.

Interesting study, and in a way, it points up what we occasionally run into here. Some very up-tight people with odd beliefs visit us from time to time.

But one doesn't need to stray far from home to find this sort of thing. Predjuditial attitudes of all sorts are common among religious fundelmentalists of all stripes. My personal favorite, Fag-Bashin' Fred Phelps, is now behind James 'The Sponger' Dobson for the coveted, annual Head-up-the-Ass Award, that Jerry 'Hawgjaw' Falwell had a lock on ever since the Tele Tubby hilarity. Alas, after a strong start, Jerry seems to have fallen back as well. If we can get them all in a cage match, I'll put my money on Mediocre Fred. He's a tough, old bigot.

But I never associated predjudice, racial or otherwise, with astrology or other forms of common whackery. I wonder how the results would fare with agnostixs and atheists.

Edit: was going to clean up the agnostics typo, but I've come to like it as it is.
