Two different people have told me tonight that Robert Stevens, the 63 year old Florida man who died of anthrax yesterday, was a co-founder of the Weekly World News. This was the first anthrax fatality in the US since 1976. http://www.cnn.com/2001/HEALTH/conditions/10/05/anthrax.case/ I can't find a link for Stevens' alleged connection to WWN in the news, and the WWN site doesn't mention it. Stevens' place of residence, Lantana, is also home to the WWN, and his age would be about right.

D, I went on the papers web site too, you'd think if he was connected with it they'd have some credit for him. But Geeses Krist, you got me looking at stuff about Hitler being a women and dying in 1992 at the age of 103. Sheesh, find your own damn information, LOL.

Piltdown: I think you definitely are on to something... It ought to take some following up to get to the bottom of this. Research back issues of the WWN for an answer. Does the WWN keep its back issues?

And now there's been a second suspected case of anthrax. http://www.miami.com/herald/special/news/terrorism/digdocs/113818.htm Are people jumping on the terrorism badwagon too soon with this? If anthrax was no longer a threat, why would vets around the country continue to get the vaccination? Trust me on this one, it is not a pleasant procedure. Makes every GG, yellow fever, and typhoid shot you've ever gotten look like a walk in the park. Lisa

Batten down the hatches! This could produce an unprecedented panic if any more cases are confirmed, and conspira-wackies will go ape-s***. It isn't funny at all, but I can't help but see a lot of irony in the initial victims being such high-profile panic-mongers and sensationalists.

They are certainly giving this story a lot of play on CNN tonight. I wish I could make a living out of this. At least CNN's not as bad as some of the shows on CNBC in the evening where they start with the assumption that someone has done something to someone and that heresay is as good as evidence. Yeah I'm looking at you Heraldo!

Thank goodness I don't have cable. Yes, someone HAS done something. I don't know how you mean that. In other words who has done something, an individual or a terrorist group or what? I happen to know what happened. Someone, an individual has seen too many episodes of 'Colombo' or 'Murder She Wrote', that was a plot on both those shows and probably other murder mystery stories. Someone took this oppertunity to murder someone under the guise of this horrible situation we are going through. That's all. Nothing to get hysterical about.

A local high tech firm has been receiving boxes from the vicinity of the anthrax cases that are empty except for shredded paper. No cases, yet. No report of spores in the packing.

i find the weekly world news almost as believable as ari fLIEsher's news briefings. the guy just seems to be dishonest. its wonderfully reassuring when the pResident's spokesthing tells the press to "watch what you say".
on the other hand there is some rich irony in the fact that the anthrax outbreak occurs at the publishing house for six supermarket tabloids.

Perhaps the anthrax is being sent through the mails, because a worker in the mail room had an anthrax spore in his nostril. There were anthrax spores all over the computer keyboard of the man who died. The others could have contacted it by being near the dying man.
I think that we all need to be very careful of the mail that we open, particularly when it has no return address (which could be faked, however).
I do not worry about this. One can only be careful and stay away from crowds (which is almost impossible).
The creeps in this world really can get to you, sometimes.

Article in today's local paper (Austin American Statesman) sports section. Seems that Anthrax is endemic to the local deer population and is one of the primary causes of mortality among them (far higher than hunting).

An envelope without a return address came in the mail today of a friend of mine; there was only the address of my friend. The postmark was from Dallas, Texas. I cautioned my friend to take care before opening the envelope. However, in spite of my concerns, he opened the envelope [not around me] and said (later) that there was nothing but an advertisement in the envelope. Somebody ought to tell these fools who are sending advertisements without return addresses that they need a return address in this day and age. I, myself, would not have opened it. Anybody who is stupid enough to send anything without a return address, should not benefit from such stupidity.
