I knew that there's a card for every occasion, but this is ridiculous!

If this was a joke item, I could see it, but the card promoter is not marketing it as such!

Damn her, for because of her, I've had to agree with the Rapture Ready people on this topic!

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

I'm afraid I can't agree with fundies even on this issue. Marriages today in America are so diverse and personal, I'm not in a position to make a blanket judement of people who committ adultery. (And I am happily married!)

These cards seem like no big deal to me. Just another sign that the nature of marriage in modern American society is in flux, as it pretty much has been since... well, that depends...

I mean, love-based monogamous marriages are a relatively new institution, and some could argue, they have a high rate of dysfunction and a high rate of failure.

Divorce went through the roof after women's lib in the 60's 'caused women could be economically independent, and even previous to the 60's, many marriages were highly dysfunctional.

Plus people are living longer and much more socially mobile, which also destabilizes monogamy.

There's lots of evidence that love-based, monogamous, life-long partnerships are dying out as the standard, and being replaced by serial monogamy. I suppose I sort of fit in that category, since I lived with a guy for a while before meeting my husband and getting married. Adultery is often just the result of a botched transition from one monogamous relationship to the next.

"She's just making money out of other people's misery," says Robin Sawyer, a public health professor and human sexuality expert at the University of Maryland. "I think most of us would agree that infidelity is a negative thing, so we're now selling cards to celebrate a negative thing."

Gallagher, who won't give her age but appears to be somewhere north of 40, doesn't take a position on whether affairs are good or bad. She notes simply that they exist. And, like any good capitalist, when she saw a market opening, she went for it. She says consumers, not the morality police, will decide if her business succeeds or fails.

How many others make their livings from the misery of others? And make others miserable in the process? Divorce lawyers come to mind....

I find this sort of thing in poor taste, but beyond that, hell, I don't have to buy one -- Mrs. Gallagher will make a fortune on them without my assistance.

Agreeing with marf.
