You have to admit, they do sound a lot alike! http://www.hatecrime.org/subpages/hitler/hitler.html
Something for those people to maybe be aware of, eh?

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.
Another example of this guy's lunacy here. |

I have been involved in gay rights activism for 8 years, but I have to say, I roll my eyes at this sort of thing. People have been using Hitler and Nazi quotes to criticize their enemies who might use similar wording for decades now.
That's a logical fallacy, people!
Besides, we shouldn't have to point to a similar Nazi speech to say that anti-gay religious-righters are being bigoted assholes. That's obvious. |

Well I agree that the Nazi comparison does get a little overused. Why do the Nazi's always get to be the poster boys for evil? But this is about more than just similar wording, it's about similar ideas.quote: That's a logical fallacy, people!
It would be a logical fallacy if the ideas weren't reprehensible in their own right. If, for example, they were trying to imply that the ideas were reprehensible because of their association to Nazism, that would be a logical fallacy.quote: Besides, we shouldn't have to point to a similar Nazi speech to say that anti-gay religious-righters are being bigoted assholes. That's obvious.
Yeah, we shouldn't have to. But if it helps get the point across, why not? |

I think the complaint that comparing any activity or statement to Nazis is overused is a complaint that is overused.
The Nazis used specific political, propaganda and military techniques to achieve their goals, and often documented their plans, rationale and results. Noticing and commenting that a current politician is using a technique described in Mein Kampf is being treated like a slam that is unfair to make. It's like "nazi" is supposed to stand for an evil so evil that no human bad behavior can compare. But, folks, the Nazis were humans, and they got away with a lot of stuff over their 13 year reign of terror. It would not be a surprise for people of bad intention to study and apply techniques that have worked before. It would be more surprising if they didn't. |
