Agreed. Unfortunatley, someone would have to write the syllabus. Personally, I'd give Filthy the job any day, but I doubt the fundies would be happy. There'd be hell to pay.

As to banning artificial pregnancies for certain groups, consider article 16 from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

quote:
(1) Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.

As such the ban on people who cannot prove that they have participated in "faith-based or church activities" is clearly illegal. The ban on lesbians is more ambiguous, I would argue that any limitation of the sort is unethical, but it is not stated in the Declaration.

Of course, the US has a history of non-compliance with this document. Just look at articles 9, 10, 11 & 12 that deal with the rights of those accused of a penal offense and the right to protection from arbitrary intererence with privacy and compare it to the decisions made in the 'war on terrorism'. Also article 25 where the right of a fair standard of living is asserted is relevant in this context (US prisons are, I am given to understand, disgusting).

One problem with your thought there Subjectmatter, that is assuming the US has abrogated it's rights as a sovereign nation and subjected itself to 'international laws'. Now if this is a treaty that the US signed, then it's a different matter. In which case, I wonder that they can call this a Christian nation after the signing of the Treaty of Tripoli.

According to this story Indiana is considering a bill to require a certificate for medically assisted pregnancies.

quote:
Among the determining factors is a requirement that the women be married to a person of the opposite sex. The assessment would contain a description of the family lifestyle and automatically exclude lesbians. Women would also have to provide proof that they have participated in faith-based or church activities.

So should the government be allowed to dictate who can have children by artificial means?

Considering the requirement of proof of faith-based activities does this mean that atheists wont be allowed to have children by artificial means?

And who would determine whether or not a couple has the right family lifestyle?

And here the right-wing nuts thought it would be the liberals who would intrude and limit their reproductive rights.

Dear Madam;

We appreciate your letter to us of December X, IV B.C.

Unfortunately, Indiana Law makes it a criminal offense for you to visit our state given your medical condition. Indiana Code XXXI-XX states specifically that it is a crime for an unmarried women to become pregnant "by means other than sexual intercourse." As your current physical condition is caused by such improper means we must deny your request to deliver your demon seed in the State of Indiana.

Thank you for your inquiry. Someday, perhaps, there will be someone that comes along that can absolve you of your craven sin and wickedness.

Sincerely,

The Division of Reproductive Services

Apparently Indiana has dropped the bill.

The sponsor said that it “…raised to many issues”.

I made a search for it on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_human_rights, and it seems that I was a little premature in saying that it is 'illegal' ... still, such a limitation would be plainly wrong.

Nation under God? I get the drift, yea, pretty funny. I'm clueless RE criteria non-selular folk might like, but anyway, I don't like using words like "impossible" but it's not too far off the mark RE testing for decent parenting. The worst of the worst... people that couldn't care less about a kid, but are calculated enough to present a "model parent" public image... would surely have stellar scores. I'd speculate that better parents might tend to score low in the percentiles because they'd tend to be more honest. (Back to joke mode) yea, I think it's a great idea, but many young folks today react adversely to written tests- a video game might be better. Give them a 3D rendering of an apartment with a kid, let them select from typical child-rearing accessories, like cable TV channel choices (MTV, VH1) Sony Play Station, video games (Doom, Grand Theft Auto) and food items (soda, devil dogs, potato chips.) Give them joystick, the game starts. Scenarios: Kid starts screaming (grab 9-iron?) Social Services at door (pretend not home?) Early-Puberty youth asks about sex (Request prescription for Ritalin? Tell to pray the rosary?)
