If I'd had moderation rights in this folder, it could have been me...
Since I don't, I'm not disqualified from the contest.

The Soviets had that landing method pretty well wired. I would imagine that these astronauts were padded and strapped in like a NASCAR, Winston Cup driver.
It was ages since I read anything about the Soviets... But I recall reading that some of their manned landing capsules had retro-thrusters.

And landing in the Barren Plains of Outer Despair, or wherever, must be a hell of a lot easier and cheaper than sending a small battle fleet to pick up a splash-down. I've wondered about that; why couldn't we have done the same in one of our desert areas?

Perhaps you weren't confident in your marksmanship?

And then perhaps it also was a matter of isolation: If the crew were infected by bacteria or virus from outer space, it would be easier to quaranteen it as a ship, rather than the desert where austronauts could escape in any direction.
Just remember what happened in "Capricorn One"...

Shee-it Doc, those NASA Buffoons have shown that they could drop it on a dime!

Agree, but after the first couple have shown that the coast was clear, as it were, why not do it in Death Valley or somewhere similiar? Just think of the squeals of exctasy to be heard from the UFO dingbats if it was done at night!

GREAT GOBS OF GOOSE GREASE! 16 pages! Somebody was asleep at the switch, methinks, and now there can be no loser. But then, we seem to have lost bbbb again, anyway.

Whoa! Thought I had some time! Last night there were still five more posts this thread could take, I think. Anyhow, here goes…

This thread is locked due to length.

Feel free to start a new thread on this subject if you are so inclined…
Bla bla bla bla bla…

The winners will not be announced later today…

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?
