And now that we're into the 15th page of this thread,
it will soon be closed. So I'd like you all to enjoy

Okay, here is a terrific new SFN contest. It's the “Guess
Who Will Lock This Thread”
game. Could be Dave, it could be me. Right now we don't even know! The winner gets another free fifteen-page trip down a fresh, new, but strangely familiar thread in celebration of that whacky, one of a…ummmmm…two of kind…ummmmmm…mind, owned and operated by our own master of the never met a confutation that couldn't be ignored star of this thread, bigbrain!

Note: In case of a tie, the prize goes to the losers. In fact, it goes to them anyway…

Note: Either bigbrain or bigballs may enter. But we will only count one entry. Therefore, bigbrain and bigballs must decide on who will enter or both will be disqualified. And of course both will be disqualified even if we disqualify only one entry by either bigbrain or bigballs if both enter, or something like that…

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?

Oog. After reading that, I'm feeling a little disoriented....

Well, shut 'er down and we'll see who the trophy loser turns out to be. The thrill of anticipation is so intense that it's putting me to sleep....

These threads gave me an actual nightmare. I dreamed I was watching TV and the station cut in with breaking news - a live shot of an attempt by the Russians to rescue someone by picking them up with an enormous rocket. You could see the tiny figure in the distance and the huge rocket in a controlled descent above it. Suddenly the rocket began to tip to the right, but the stabilizing system deflected it's jets to compensate and it righted itself and landed.

Unfortunately, there are some very good reasons why it's impractical to land a massive rocket adjacent to a human being in order to rescue them. I did , however, succeed in confuting bigbrain/brakeballs while fast asleep.

Oh, and I'd put my virtual money on Dave for the closure pool.

Ay Me, Ay Me, I Sigh the Scythe A-field

Ay me, ay me, I sigh to see the scythe a-field;
Down goeth the grass, soon wrought to wither'd hay:
Ay me, alas! ay me, alas, that beauty needs must yield,
And princes pass, as grass doth fade away.

Ay me, ay me, that life can not have lasting leave,
Nor gold take hold of everlasting joy:
Ay me, alas! ay me, alas, that time hath talents to receive,
And yet no time can make a suer stay.

Ay me, ay me, that wit can not have wished choice,
Nor wish can win that will desires to see:
Ay me, alas! ay me, alas, that mirth can promise no rejoice,
Nor study tell what afterward shall be.

Ay me, ay me, that no sure staff is given to age,
Nor age can give sure wit that youth will take:
Ay me, alas! ay me, alas, that no counsel wise and sage
Will shun the show that all doth mar and make.

Ay me, ay me, come, Time, shear on and shake thy hay,
It is no boot to balk thy bitter blows:
Ay me, alas! ay me, alas, come, Time, take everything away,
For all is thine, be it good or bad, that grows.

I think you are one of the biggest idiot I've ever seen.

Well bbbb, the Dragon has landed. Are you now going to tell us that it never flew and it's all a hoax perpretrated by Chinese engineering buffoons?

Of course he is...

From the link above:
quote:
The craft, carrying two astronauts, landed at 0432 on Monday (2032 GMT on Sunday) in the remote grasslands of Inner Mongolia.
Ouch!

Not landing in the water, but on land. A splash-down should have been more confortable, I would think, since the water is a bit softer than ground. But that all depends of course on the rate of descent.

The Soviets had that landing method pretty well wired. I would imagine that these astronauts were padded and strapped in like a NASCAR, Winston Cup driver.

And landing in the Barren Plains of Outer Despair, or wherever, must be a hell of a lot easier and cheaper than sending a small battle fleet to pick up a splash-down. I've wondered about that; why couldn't we have done the same in one of our desert areas?

It was ages since I read anything about the Soviets... But I recall reading that some of their manned landing capsules had retro-thrusters.

Perhaps you weren't confident in your marksmanship?

And then perhaps it also was a matter of isolation: If the crew were infected by bacteria or virus from outer space, it would be easier to quaranteen it as a ship, rather than the desert where austronauts could escape in any direction.
Just remember what happened in "Capricorn One"...
