Being from Australia, and since we have devoted 1500 ground troops and half our navy to Afghanistan to help the American forces. What do you guys think is the probability of attacks similar to Sept 11th happening in say London or Sydney. There is a fair amount of panic among the conservatives over here about the fact that we are supporting America and the Taliban have allready singled us out (which the press have gone to town on)
Should we be overly worried?????

Bah, I think these terrorist assholes have shot their wad, so to speak. If they had any big attacks left in them, we in the US probably would have been hit by now.

I would practice some concern. But outright panic will worsen anyting. Look at the European countries - many have raided and arrested suspected terrorist cells. I wasn't aware that Al Qa'eda had targeted Sydney or Australia specifically. Do you have a link or something?
Windup- I wouldn't completely discount the possibility of another attack - of some type. But I doubt it will be on the scale of what we saw in NYC.
It is by the goodness of God that in our country we have those three unspeakably precious things: freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and the prudence never to practice either of them. -Mark Twain |

Gezzam, I'd be alert but not terribly concerned. After all, we Americans have the distinction of being the "Great Satan". I think that the bulk of the maniac's attention will be concentrated on us, assuming they have any attention left. Many of us might dispise the current admistration, but we support it's war effort none the less. bin Ladin is goin' down and his jack-leg organization with him.

Well with the Northern Alliance stampeding into Kabul with their AK-47's and shaving implements...it looks like our worst fears may be over.
Although that little prick is still out there somewhere.

Please take note: In case no one noticed it, all of us Americans have been placed under martial law effective Tuesday, November 13, 2001. And yes, I'm well aware that some of you reading this will not believe me. However, please read the following VERY closely. Under martial law you DO NOT have a right to a trial by a civilian jury. Under martial law you are judged by a military court, a military panel, or, as the report below states, by a "special military commission". It's all the same thing when you are brought forth to face a military court composed of military officers - not civilian judges. When a country is placed under martial law civilians CAN be brought forth to face a military trial, instead of a civilian trial. If you look at paragraph four you will see where it says, "..and a military trial can be held overseas." That right there defines that a military court can and will be convened if needed. And, the military trial will be held in this country OR in a foreign country depending on what the military and/or the White House decides. Also notice where it says: "...people accused of terrorism..." in the first paragaph. ANYONE *CAN* be "accused" of terrorism and forced to face a military trial while under a state of martial law. So, if you didn't know what was going on, be advised that NOW you do. Apparently the "powers that be" in Washington D.C. didn't want to say the words - Martial Law - for a whole number of reasons; one of them being the effect it would have on Wall Street and on the economy. Les ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bush Order: Terror Trials by Military By Ron Fournier AP White House Correspondent Tuesday, November 13, 2001; 6:00 PM WASHINGTON –– President Bush signed an order Tuesday that would allow for the trial of people accused of terrorism by a special military commission instead of civilian courts, The Associated Press has learned. The order, signed by Bush before he left for Crawford, Texas, gives the Bush administration another avenue to bring the Sept. 11 terrorists to justice, said White House counsel Albert Gonzales. "This is a new tool to use against terrorism," Gonzales said in a telephone interview. The White House was to release the order late Tuesday. Gonzales, a former Texas Supreme Court judge who is the president's top lawyer, said a military commission could have several advantages over a civilian court. It is easier to protect the sources and methods of investigators in military proceedings, for example, and a military trial can be held overseas. Gonzales said there may be times when prosecutors feel a trial in America would be unsafe. "There may not be a need for this and the president may make a determination that he does not want to use this tool, but he felt it appropriate that he have this tool available to him," the lawyer said.

G.N.:
This topic probably deserves its own thread. Maybe you'd like to start one?
Personally, I don't know enough about the law (civilian or military) to know whether this order is equivalent to martial law. It does seem like a threat to civil liberties, however, on the face of it.
