Saw this article about a Paso Robles CA councilman attempting to have the phrase "In God We Trust" placed in the City Council chambers. According to the article he was put up to this by "In God We Trust America".
quote: Councilman Fred Strong initiated the issue after receiving a letter from In God We Trust America, a nonprofit that is encouraging cities to display the phrase, which Congress made the national motto in 1956. "This is our history, it's our official motto," Strong said. "We should be proud of our heritage."
Who is "In God We Trust America"?
quote: Jacquie Sullivan, a councilwoman from Bakersfield, formed the nonprofit after the Bakersfield City Council agreed to have the motto in its council chambers three years ago. Sullivan pushed for the motto after hearing on the radio that residents of some East Coast cities wanted to have it removed from civic buildings. "We have the right as Americans to display proudly and prominently the national motto," Sullivan said. "It represents love of God and country. ... It is promoting historical and patriotic pride."
"Love of god and country"??? Last I checked you could have one without the other, and neither is a legal requirement. She sounds like another theocrat trying to jam religion down our civic throats. Their website is "under construction".
Here is some history of the motto in question. Personally, I believe it should be stricken from money, government buildings, and all other taxpayer supported items, and any law authorizing it as a "national motto" should be stricken. Plenty of citizens don't trust in any god, and we don't need to provide governmental support to those who do.
