By JOHN MAINELLI
March 7, 2006 -- AIR America is close to losing its New York flagship station - knocking Al Franken and his liberal colleagues off the air on their second anniversary.

The network has a two-year lease with WLIB (AM 1190) that is reportedly set to expire April 1 - and at least one reliable report says it is "extremely likely" the deal will not be renewed.

Losing its New York outlet would be a serious blow to the fledgling liberal radio network. "Radio Equalizer" blogger Brian Maloney - who blew the whistle on questionable loans to the lefty network last year - published the first report that WLIB was on...

With Danny Goldberg in charge, canceling everything of value this is no surprise.

Maybe it doesn't really need a point of presence in New York when it is on satellite radio?

Oh really? I guess I did not consider the fact that it might have booming ratings on satellite radio???? Any idea how they are doing there?

Considering the number of people with conventional radio vs. satellite I can't imagine that they are thriving off of satellite radio. Maybe they are though? I did take the time to look at the equalizer blog http://radioequalizer.blogspot.com/2005/03/new-liberal-talk-radio-ratings.html and things do not appear to be going very good for Air America these days. Of course AA says they are just fine and will be in this for the long haul, so I guess time will tell on this one. I just find it hard to imagine that if they can't make it in NY city that they will make it anywhere? I wonder what Al will do next?

Apparently what you consider to have "value" the rest of the market just considereds crap, hence the try at JS to bring in anyone who has a pulse to listen to Al.

Bill what makes you think we care about Air America?

I once forced myself through 15 whole minutes of Franken's show. Ugh. Either it was just a low point, or Franken sucks nowadays. I can't say that I gave it a good sampling, but I can still long for the good-ol'-days (for example, his spots on the Daily Show during the 2000 campaign - or maybe it was Arianna Huffington who made those worth watching).

I can not find a radio station around here that even carries AA. I once did tune in via the webcast and that guy (Al Franken) he is just mad at the world it would appear. Maybe he is stressed out with trying to pick up a few more affilites, who knows?

My dad's about as liberal as they come, but he's not to fond of Al Franken. His theory is that Franken is a comedian, but that recently he's just become so angry about the politics in America, and that's coming through so he's not funny anymore.

I remember when Air America was first coming on and all these liberals on NPR were all in a tizzy of excitement about it – we were going to have our version of Rush! Yay! But maybe the problem is that liberals don't want to listen to pundits as much as conservatives do. I don't enjoy Moore's documentaries all that well ‘cause I always feel like I'm being emotionally manipulated. (I'm not criticizing Moore. He's quite good at what he does and indeed, he is not a liar.) But I'd rather hear more detached analysis and factual reports. I don't know if that is the norm for liberals, but it is for me.

Don't count your chickens before they're hatched. I'm not convinced that enough Americans truly grasp how bad things are compared to how good they could have been. I think the reign of rich-fucks-conservatism (I say "rich fucks" because the Bush administration has hardly been conservative when it comes to spending, pissing off many traditional conservatives) could go on a lot longer.

Then again, some bookies in Vegas were setting up odds for betting on whether Bush's approval ratings would dip under 30%.

I hope you are right, Filthy, I hope you are right.
