I'm off on holiday to Italy on Thursday for just over a week. It's the first proper holiday I will have had since 1988.
I know this is not profound or useful in anyway, but I'm excited and need to vent it all out.

Most Cool!!! Where to in Italy? You're going to rent a car or what? I've spent a bit of time there, I can help you avoid some pitfalls. (Especially if you're travelling by auto) Lisa

Im flying out to Naples and will spend most of next week in Rome. This weekend, however, I intend to travel to a small town just north of Pompeii called San Valentino Torri. Some friends of mine told me it was a great place to relax. I've decided not to rent a car, I'll try out the wonderful European trains (wonderful compared to the rubbish I have to put up ith here).
So what do you recommend, I would be very interested.

Be careful on the train. Are these overnight train trips? If so, rotate one person keeping guard. I'll assume you keep your wallet in your back pocket. Move it to your front pocket. Or, this is a neat trick, wrap your wallet in some rubber bands. If you do decided to rent a car, when you stop at rest areas, one person should stay in the car. Some friends of mine didn't follow that advice, and lost $800. I don't want to bum you out on Italy, its a great place, the people are wonderful and I'm still trying to lose the weight from the food. But be prepared, there is a strong criminal element that preys on tourists. If you get a chance to try mussels with pasta and wine sauce, I'll hate you forever. Oh! And have the wine-soaked scampi tossed with olive oil in pasta. I hate you. You bastard. Love and kisses Lisa

Sounds good, thanks. Any advice for someone travelling alone?

The advice for travelling together applies to the lone traveller, too. Keep your wallet in your front pocket, and the rubber bands thing works. If you sleep on the train, your luggage should be the locking kind and kept where it will disturb you if moved or touched. Be careful of 'soft' luggage that can be cut with a knife (hard to avoid them these days, I know). Preferably, when sleeping, choose the seats (take one and the one opposite it; be rude) near the window and place the luggage away from the door. Run a belt or cord through the handles and attach it to your wrist or belt loop.
Anything left out of your immediate control is at risk. There is no such thing as "I'll grab it in just a moment..."
My kids still love me. |

And don't dress so that it screams to all and sundry "HI, I'm a tourist!!!" Ed and I went camping at Camp Darby (near Pisa) 3 or 4 years in a row over the 4th of July holiday. We never had any problems. The people who live down there year round said the most crime on tourists happens at the rest stops and on trains. Lisa

Didn't your mother ever tell you Not to talk to strangers?!!! You are from England, right? How can you say the trains are not good? LOL, guess you would know better than I, but when I was there, albeit some years ago, they were very nice. I loved traveling in the Tubes too, one could go anywhere in minutes. England is the only European country I've been to, I'm only familiar with Asia but I hope to go back again, it's so beautiful. Brits are so friendly and helpful. If I were you, I'd stay home and enjoy the countryside in your own country.
Rap Crap is to music what Paint by Numbers is to art. Oh, sorry, I should add though, Do have a nice time where ever you go. DON'T take a lot of cash(travelers cheques, only if possible or credit card(but watch the money exchange rate)), and don't take anything of great value, such as jewerly, travel lite so as a lone person you won't have a lot of bags to look after. Pack and then take out 1/2 of what you think you'll need. Trust me!

Thansk for the advice everyone. It's reaal strange though, I've added three topics to this site, one in conspiricy about Jack the Ripper and another about pointless military conflicts yet this topics has generated the biggest response. I really must go on holiday more often.
