Part of me is excited, part of me is apprehensive....Excited because it is by far my favorite fantasy novel, apprehensive because it is by far my favorite fantasy novel......

Does that make sense???????

PS One of the guys from work downloaded it off the net, he said it was excellent....

Although I'm sure I'll be roasted over the coals for getting excited about an epic fantasy movie when there are so many more important things to think about and ponder skeptically, I confess I am looking forward with GREAT ANTICIPATION to seeing "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" tomorrow night (and already have my tickets in hand).

Rubysue, if you think you're gonna be roasted for this, you are wrong. I have read posts elsewhere that people are practically drooling to see this. Believe me, you are in good company out there.

Myself, I haven't read the books in question, so I may just wait til it comes out on video.

According to this site (see link below - this group accumulates movie reviews into a combined rating), LOTR:FOTR is getting boffo, glowing reviews from just about every major critic. It has also turned up on more than a few top ten lists. Just think, for you Tolkien fans out there, all three movies are already in the can, and "The Two Towers" will be in theatres before you know it (at least at my age, a year passes pretty quickly).

http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/fellowshipofthering

I, of course (being a major self-described geek), have read the books many times (and am close to finishing a quick read of FOTR again before seeing the film); they were a mainstay when I was in college and I even confess to decorating my dorm room with maps of Middle Earth and Hildenbrand calendars filled with red-cheeked Hobbits and gorgeous Nordic Galadrials (being a snob and cultural elitist, I must say that handsome and valiant Aragorn is my favorite character, followed closely by Gandalf and then Frodo, although Samwise is also quite heroic).

After the depressing gloom of the news and pundits and stupid deconstructionist arguments and fear resonating from the last three months, it's really quite pleasant to think about escaping into Middle Earth for a night. I actually spent my news surfing time today looking for reviews of LOTR:FOTR rather than reading the latest on Binny and his Rat Pak. By the way, if some of you can't wait to let me know how much you loathe Tolkien and want to eagerly denigrate my bad taste and lack of intellect, at least wait until I report on the movie before consigning me and the hobbits to fantasyland limbo.

The Road goes ever on and on...

Roger Ebert didn't like it that much. This means it's gonna be GREAT! When I heard about the talent they got for this movie, I got excited. I'm definately going to see this movie with my wife and son. Anytime that you get the original illustrator for the series to do set design, you've got a pretty damn good starting point. From the previews, I don't think I'll be disappointed.

It make perfect sens i to felt that when you love a book inoff you have your OWN picture on how it looks and how things are.
Amovie is great but it can also chatter the picture your fantasy have creatid.

I felt just like you when i was standing in the snowstorm ouside the Movie to se LoR but the bigest complain i have is that it where ONLY 3 h.. I would gladly hade the LoR to be 4-5 h if they only where more true to the book.

Saw it at the 12:01 am showing last night. I can say that this is the first time I've ever seen a nearly 3 hour movie, and wished it was longer.

Oh they did have to cut a bit out. It has been at least 15 years since I read the books. Yet still remember a few parts I whish they had included.. (material for the DVD) At times it did seem to be jumping from one scene to the next with little or no exposition to show the journey in between. There were also some changes, but I don't think it realy hurts the story. Mostly to make the film more understandable I think.. I sometimes wonder if someone who hasn't read the books can realy follow it all.

How was the movie? It was.... Epic! At the end kinda felt like I was left hanging, waiting for what happens next. We've come so far and yet still have a long way to go.

Oh yea, the Balrog was awsome! Hell, a couple hundred orcs chasing them through the mines, running across crumbling walkways, vast halls, the whole mine segment was cool.

I saw it this afternoon. You won't be disappointed.

Will it catch on with people who haven't read the books? Er... are there any people who haven't read the books?

Well, my husband for one. Everytime we see the trailer on TV, he wants to know why the Ring is so damned important. How am I supposed to explain all of that is a few short easy sentences? We'll probably see it tomorrow. For those of you who've seen it, will he understand what's going on?

this will be one of those movies that I'll actually pay to see in the theater on the big screen

Lisa...might have to get hubby to read The Silmarillion to appreciate the importance of the Ring

Have you lost your mind? I've had physics books that are easier to slog through than the Slimarillion!
Ed isn't what you'd call a prolific reader. I've started him on some Eddings stuff. Its fantasy with lots of fights and blood. He loves it.
We're probably going to try to catch the movie within the next couple of days. I've pretty much explained the Hobbit. I pointed out that Sauron put so much of his own power into the One Ring, that if its destroyed, Sauron = Poof. Is that enough to get him by?

Quite possibly...I've been accused of it often enough over the years.

I've read it several times...didn't think it was overwhelming. But then I've also reread the Gormenghast trilogy twice...for fun.

Now you've done it...now I gotta drag out the Eddings and give it a once-over again!

Oughta be enough to get him into it. Might help if you add that Sauron is such a primo baddie

The two-second synopsis (if you've read the books, there are no spoilers below):

I spent the first part of the movie a bit worried at how it seemed rushed as the Hobbits journeyed from the Shire to Bree (picking up Strider) to Rivendell. Then I obsessed on where I had seen the actor who plays Elrond (it dawned on me when he spoke a few lines - he was in "The Matrix"). The movie really came alive for me when they had the council of Elrond and then departed south with the Fellowship. Although a few things were not in the right place or combined with others to make them more effective for the uninitiated audience, all and all I must say that it was AWESOME and definitely worth seeing a few times!!

I actually sat through the full three hours and didn't have to run to the restroom (a shock at my age).

Best character so far: Gandalf. Ian McKellan was terrific - he will be a sight to behold when he becomes Gandalf the White (oops, hope I didn't give it away).

The character I'm most looking forward to seeing more of in the next film: Gollum. The glimpse of this pathetic creature in the mines of Moria was intriguing.

One year and counting until "The Two Towers"....

By the way, I realized as I read my original post that it sounded a bit cynical and strange (even for me) - I'll explain why in another post...

Eddings?

Eddings?!

EDDINGS??!!!!!

Sheesh. I admit it's been over a decade since I read any of his stuff, but it struck me as downright amateurish and plagiaristic. I'm shocked at your taste.
(Not that I have an opinion, mind you.)
