Oh indeed I do want to be liked...but by people that I respect. I don't give a damn how you feel feel about me.

quote: Did I miss something or did you? Didn't someone in this thread use that term?
I used the term to refer to Chomsky, and I thought I was clear on how I meant it. Simple dissent, even angry dissent is not anti-American, and I offered a personal example.

Okay, I see what you're saying. Now, I think we've gotten off topic. Sorry people!

Wow! I've decided I do like you. In fact, I've decided that you will be the man that I shall marry someday.

All right, stop flirting you two.
Here, re Chompsky, read it and weep:

I agree with most of what this guy has to say.

You've been asked to take the Chomsky debate somewhere else. If you do that, please take the time to actually attempt to read and understand Chomsky.

At least I'm contributing substative things instead of flirting. :p
I am told his linguistic work is excellent. I'll take it on trust that it is, language isn't my field (I can't even spell!).
Politics, however, is a subject near and dear to my heart. And I'm familiar enough with Chomsky's politics.
Your assertion that one needs to read Chomsky's babble to criticise him is rather silly, I have not read Mien Kampf either, does that mean I can't criticise Nazism? Am I required to read, cover to cover, the stunningly tedious 'Fountainhead' to understand Objectivism? Must I read every word of L Ron's babble to criticise Scientology?
And does not a article outlining Chomsky's allegedly moronic beliefs have relevence to a discussion of whether he is a moron? It would seem relevent.....
No, you realize that Chomsky is indefensible in this respect, so you hide under an appeal to ignorance and 'oh, we can't discuss this here'.
Tell ya' what, when I finish my paper, I'll start a thread dedicated to Chomsky.

I didn't say you were ignorant. I asked you to please make sure you've read and understood. If you have, fine. I didn't say it was necessary, I made a request. I didn't say I would discuss anything. I simply pointed out that we've been asked to move political discussion elsewhere. If you think that's hiding, then that's your problem, not mine.
Please don't take the same tack as those that say that I say that because they disagree with Chomsky means that they haven't read Chomsky. I haven't said that. I've only said that they've misrepresented what Chomsky has said as this article does (not very substantive). It's an appeal to emotion with little substance. I appreciate you posting it, as now I know where some other people here got their ideas.

i would have to say Chomsky. He once had a brain. Two nominations are just minor twits. Granted the last year has certainly made for a difficult choice of only eight but i would change half the list. After all, the nomination is for moron not utter asshole. Just my two cp worth.

hmmm, hadn't fully read this thread through...only thge first page. Quite a bit of wailing about old Noam. I have read him extensively and knew him personally from my time at MIT. The my is undeniably brilliant in his chosen field. He has quite particular and peculiar views on everything else. His viewpoint is highly colored by his personal history. This is only an explanation of his irrationality not an apology. I can personally attest that if one were ot get into a discussion with him on virually any topic it would lead to a loud stirring debate....on your part not his. He doesn't get loud but, instead, has a magical way of pissing of his opponents. He is a very brilliant man after all. Anyway, more fodder, for the current thread. My suggestion would be for ALL of you to become more familiar with the man and ALL his writings/opinions so that some intelligent debate might be forthcoming. But then, what do i know.

People get pissed off because people like being pissed off, not because of anything that has anything to do with reality.

true or oerhaps they just insist on being right and once the realize they have lost the argument they start shouting to obscure the fact. i notice most creationists start shouting the second they open their mouths.....
