Grab a dictionary? Sorry that this spellchecker is not better, but I didn't write any of that code. All it does is look through a list of words and of it is not found it highlights the word. It is nowhere near sophisticated enough to go and decide what it should be. I could always add some code that activates the MS Word object in windows and all the features that come with it. The drawback to that is that browser security has to be set to low and must allow active X to automatically installed. Cool as the spellchecking & grammarchecking would be, it is too much of a security risk.

Yes, and what if I'm using netscape which doesn't support the dangerous and useless active X (well it does have a use for hackers)?

Active X is awesome. I wish I could easily install my own here, especially to turn the forum into a 3 tier app. It would make the forum significantly faster.

Whenever there is a spell checker which automatically corrects spelling, I always find a way to disengage the spell checker. Often such spell checkers do not know all of the words in the Oxford English Dictionary and would correct a word which is correctly spelled.
In one program, the spell checker inserted "ist" every time I spelled "its". It turned out that the spell checker was for the German language! Evidently the computer program had been installed for export to Germany. In that case, I disengaged the correction portion of that spell check.
Atomic: Do not put in such a system. It might drive me nuts permanently.

Spell Check actually makes me lazy. I can blythely go along and make as many typing errors as I wish and Spell Check will let me know the error of my ways. Computers often have the nasty habit of leaving out double letters (such as "e" instead of "ee") or adding letters (as in "ee" instead of "e"). People who use computers need Spell Check in order to find the flaws made by the computer itself. At work, my computer leaves the second of a pair of letters out, while at home, my computer adds repeats of letters typed. So, it is not the typing at fault; it is the computer misbehaving. If it were the typing, I would get the same result from all computer keyboards.

If I did not know better, I would be completely confused!

Active X is a massive security risk, and wont work in netscape or under linux, never ever make a page with it on (or I might do something bad to it).
As for spell checkers, they just have to suggest words and find what it likely wrong, as long as it tries to say the US spelling of Al is wrong and corrects colour when someone leaves out the u.
They are very useful and provided the right dictionary is being used work quite well.

The spell checkers are not the problem. The spell CORRECTORS are. They drive me nuts. I always find a way to disengage them whenever I run across any of them.
If the spell CORRECTORS decide that a certain word must be spelled (MISSPELLED) their way, they will not permit my correction of their error.
At such times, I am ready to throw the computer into the trash. But I put a hold on such impulses.

This might sound stupid (and it most certainly is), but is the FOX network that you all are talking about the one on regular television or the one on cable. That is, the one which has been doing so much baloney in recent times (Not going to the Moon, etc.)? I watch very little television and avoid FOX because it is so full of BS, that it is painful (and boring) to watch. I get my news from the web (NY Times) or from the radio (public radio). When my husband was alive, we had all of the television stations (including all of cable at that time). I decided to drop them, because I was not watching them and was foolishly wasting money.
However, if it is on regular channels rather than on cable, I might watch it once in awhile.

I can't know better, and, therefore can't do better.

Some of them can be useful, like when I type teh wrong word.
Notice the mistake above?

In MS Word and Works if the stupid spell checker keeps telling you that you have misspelled a word you know is correct (like your last name) then you can press the "Add" button and it will add the word to the dictionary. It should never make the same mistake again. :)
Wherever you go.....there you are.
