Small neighborhood playground being forced to shut down Sunnyville, CA, November 30, 2006 (NP) -- After operating a free-admission theme playground in their front yard for only one week, the Johnstone family on Maple Street has been told they must shut down their "unauthorized" neighborhood attraction, "Bombland."
Mascot Boom-Boom the Bear sits on a bomb. According to the playground's owner, James Johnstone, "I've been an antique bomb collector for twelve years. I'm so well known as an avid collector, police and military people often 'dispose' of bombs by simply giving them to me.
"With all my stockpile of live and defused ordinance just sitting unused in the back yard, garage and basement, I figured it would be nice to give back to our neighbors, and make a real fun little playground on our front lawn for the kids on the block. Kids, especially the boys, love bombs. But those tight-asses in the Homeowners Association say we can't let kids have fun anymore."
Johnstone held up a copy of his Homeowner Agreement. "There's nothing in there that prohibits bomb playgrounds. In fact, nothing even about collecting and storing bombs. But they want to fine me $50 a day, until I shut down Bombland. Well, I can't afford to fight them in court, so I guess Bombland is history. Bastards."
