I'll have to ask him!

Faith in science is completely different by definition than faith in religion (or spirituality, etc.)

We need to come up with a different term to use, so people will stop claiming that science is a religion because we have "faith" in it.

Geeses Krist, people. There is term for it! Haven't any of you ever studied Geometry?
Axiom.
It means...... we don't have to keep proving 2+2=4
And Gorgo, your 'friend' is an idiot, I don't believe he's a millionair. But if he is, he's the damn luckiest person in the world because he didn't get it from having any brains.

Well, yes he is lucky in my opinion, if he is rich. We all have areas where we're not so good at thinking so I wouldn't call him an idiot, except as an expression of my own frustration. I call him a drunken zen priest, because he likes to make everything into some kind of mystical puzzle.

He'd say that you "believe" or have "faith" in your axioms and that's no different than the "belief" or faith" he has.

There is good philosophical support for the use of "axiom" in defense of scientific naturalism but you have to be willing to mount a grand explanation every time you bring it up. The short version is that true axioms have no logical opposites. To use Snake's example, 2+2=4 is axiomatic because the meaning of the equation is trivial; the truth value is what's important. It is merely a representation of reality. If it could be shown that 2+2=/4 (but 2+2=7 for example) it would only mean that those symbols don't accurately represent the chunks of reality that we have determined and we need to use the ones that do.

That said, I think the term "axiom" needs to be used carefully. Using the term when it's not warranted will diminish its power. Things like the base principles of logic are relatively easy to show as axiomatic, but it can get tough rather quickly, so use it at your own risk.

As a (wannabe) mathematician, I completely agree here.
