The Arm Pit of the Pacific???? Oh G-A-A-A-W-D. That place would destroy anybody's faith. Tell me how much fun I had on Shore Patrol..

For those of us whom have not either been outside the US and/or below the equator, just what is this Olongapo and why is it the Armpit of the Pacific?

Olongapo, hmm. Magsaysay is the main strip, primarily bars where you can purchase company for an hour or a night. But in order to get there from Subic you have to cross 'Shit River'. If you smell the odor from the river you'd understand why it has that name.

Oh, by '88 they'd built a fence up next to the bridge so you couldn't toss pesos to the kids in boats on the river.

Olongapo is the town next to the Subic Bay Naval Base. Every 1930's/40's movie you've ever seen that had back water South Seas towns filled with murders, whores, cut throats, bodies lying in the mud etc. etc. Put them all together and you get a pale reflection of Olongapo City.
"Arm pit of the Pacific" ? I'd put it further down and back aft.
I wonder if it's still there or if Mt Pinatubo got it?

I spaced Mt Pinatubo. Regardless, didn't they close Subic?

By '88 it was gentrified.
Back in the '60s on that very bridge an irate Mama San ran up to one of my guys and shoved a live monkey down the front of his pants. He had to get rabies shots.

It was more than a job...it was an adventure.

I think it's gone. Had to be one of the largest naval bases in the world, but no Marcos no Subic

I suppose it probably was, in some respects. Though one of the GSgts disappeared over there at the end of Gordon Street in '88 and they didn't find him until May 1990. One shot to the back of the head. In others, no.

True about the closure. That's ok, I really don't miss it.

To remain off-topic for a small bit longer: you were an SP? I may not believe in god, but I do believe in the Devil, and y'all are it! [Boron]

Well, since we're still off-topic, let me respond to Boron. Petty officers on our carrier pulled Shore Patrol every third day in port, whether we liked it or not. Yours truely pulled duty with a "lifer" in Olongapo when we were called in to break up a bar brawl. A sailor short-changed a bar girl who then smashed a beer bottle it over his head. After ramming the broken end in his guts, she pulled a pistol out of her purse and was about to blow the guy's brains out when my lifer buddy grabbed a chair and broke it over her back. Like I said, tell me how much fun I had on Shore Patrol.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled topic thread.

To get back to the original thread...Still waiting for that AHA! moment when I'll know for sure. Have drifted into a state of semi-comfortable agnosticism after a General Baptist beginning. Left that after being royally screwed by a minister professing to be trustworthy. Spent several years involved with a christian "cult" dedicated to biblical research and was taught one has to go back to original texts in Aramaic, Greek... to get rid of mistranslationsand find the true Word. This fellowship eventually lost its non-profit status due to questionable money ventures. Went back to Baptist (this time Southern) only to find laity in the church did not practice what they preached by any stretch of the imagination. Became totally disillusioned with organized religion of any kind yet still occasionally attend mass with friends and celebrate Seder every year with another group. Find comfort in the traditions and rituals but not in the teachings. Have reached the point where I describe myself as a spiritual person not a religious one but am not always comfortable with this description either.

And, as to another point...think there are days when I would be relieved to know that my existence is simply the part of some drug induced daydream of a schizophrenic. Takes a lot of the pressure off.

A colder place I've never known, than with someone but yet alone.
