quote: It's especially hard for the skeptic who is also an atheist or agnostic.
How about those of us who are so confused we don't know what the hell we are? :)
I have a standard answer I tell people when they ask about my relgious beliefs... "Confused diest/panthiest/agnostic and sometime athiest, with the emphasis on the 'confused'" :)
As for lip service, I use to go to church with my grandmother and great aunt. I actually enjoyed going, but more for social reasons then religious reasons.
I think 'religion' does fill a psycological need for humans. We seem to need tradition and ritual from time to time. So even though I have doubts that Christ even exsisted, I don't really see it as being hypocritical to observe Christmas and Easter and whatnot.
Just as someone of jewish background will say they are 'cultrually' a jew even though they are agnostic or athiest, I am culturally a christian. And outside of skeptic boards or religious discussions, I tell people I am a christian, even though that's not strictly correct. :P

Unfortunately, this often inspires people to try converting you, eh?

I agree completely with this. I believe one of the reasons I joined the Navy was to get a little ritual and tradition, since I have been agnostic as long as I can remember.
