Rev. David Meek of the Glad Tidings Church prayed for God's help in overturning Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling that made abortion legal in the United States, to "stop the killing and murder." Meek also urged lawmakers to accept Jesus.
Among those who walked out were Sens. Bob Hagedorn, D-Aurora; Penfield Tate, D-Denver; Stephanie Takis, D-Commerce City; and Mary Ellen Epps, R-Colorado Springs.
"I don't think it's appropriate for someone to lecture us on Roe vs. Wade in a prayer," Hagedorn said.
Epps said she walked out because of remarks that were belittling to women.
"That wasn't a prayer. I felt he used it for his own political views," said Takis.
Well, I was tickled to find several of my state senators would protest the offensive nature of prayer in this manner. Unfortunately, they do allow the opening prayer.

Trish, do you know of any state or local free speech issues that are binding in this case? Are there any guidelines on what is or is not acceptable in the guilt-tripping, I mean, praying that occurs in government offices? As much as I hate to admit it, I suspect the good Reverend's 1st Amendment rights are applicable here. Basically, all the senators can do is what they are doing - take him to task publicly.

Um, don't know. This happened just yesterday morning. The thing is, when these preachers are invited to conduct the opening prayer they are apparently asked to keep it low key and non-denominational, non-specific. This is the opening prayer before the senate starts business for the day. I'd have to say that this could be a constitutional issue on separation. This was obviously a ploy by this particular preacher to foist his political and moral views onto those in the senate.
I'm not sure that any action will be taken. Just thought it was great that some of the senators would stand by their views enough to stand up and walk out instead of being cowed by the concept of religion and we should be respectful of everyone's religious opinions.
I do think with the request of non-specific prayer he overstepped his bounds on the invitation. There is one senator who applauded the pastors convictions, the one who invited him. There doesn't seem to be the backlash that you would expect in some areas over their protest at the prayer and it's content, but we'll see in the coming days.
Pastor Meek told 9NEWS he hadn't planned to talk about Roe vs. Wade, the comments just came out. He also said he has no regrets, because he was just preaching his beliefs.
So, the guy's either a liar or a total zealot. I'm not sure which is worse.

The difference being....
Anyway, IMO, the liar is better than the zealot. Don't know why, just do.
