At least that''s how I see it. Our forward thinking President is backing a ban on all human cloning. The reasons he gave tell me that he doesn''t at all understand how cloning works. He is also against the improvement of humanity.

"As we seek to improve human life, we must always preserve human dignity," Bush said in a White House address. "And therefore we must prevent human cloning by stopping it before it starts."

To preserve human dignity, suffering from debilitating diseases with no hope of a cure or with hope outlawed promotes human dignity? It promotes human suffering, but never dignity.

I''ve heard that he doesn''t think for himself ever since he was (s)elected. My skepticism on the subject has suffered a considerable decrease as time has passed in this, his only (one hopes) term. I think he''s getting his cloning cues from his fundy support, and that he really DOESN''T understand it.

Did you notice how he thinks making designer babies is cloning too? I was under the impression that clones were exact duplicates. He also doesn''t seem to understand that research is going on to just grow a single needed part and not an entire human. Of course, he doesn''t understand a lot....I could go on all day.

I think the better query would be: What does Dubya understand?

Dr. Bob Park's column is always good. Here's his opinion on this mess:

3. CLONING: NOBEL LAUREATES CLASH WITH PRESIDENT BUSH.
On Wednesday, the American Society for Cell Biology released a letter signed by 40 Nobel laureates warning that a cloning ban "would have a chilling effect on all scientific research in the United States." Among the signers of the letter were a number of physicists, including former presidents of the American Physical Society, Jerry Friedman and Burt Richter. The letter strongly opposes attempts to create a cloned human being, calling for strong criminal sanctions to prevent it. However, legislation introduced by Senator Brownback (R-KS) would block even nuclear transplantation technology, which cannot be used to clone human beings but can clone stem cells for treatment of some of the most debilitating diseases known to man. President Bush somehow sees this as an attack on human dignity, and promised he would sign legislation outlawing importation of therapies developed in other countries using cloning technology. That, of course, has the effect of limiting treatment for some dreaded diseases to those who can afford to travel to other countries for treatment.

Bob Park can be reached via email at opa@aps.org

He doesn't mention what I see as another danger: many of our best and brightest will go elsewhere with their research for their paychecks. Who can blame them? If I was a scientist involved in this sort of research, I'd probably already have my resume polished.

I noticed that in the paper a few days ago, and although seemingly "dumb" decisions don't usually phase me, or even get a second glance anymore, that article did. The field's so groundbreaking and fertile, I honestly thought science, sensibility, and sanity would prevail over viewpoint of Bible, Tibetan Book of the Dead, Koran, etc. Wrong again- I guess I gotta' get more realistic about these things.

Seems to me that is contradictory on Bushs part. Isn't he for promoting families and family values? I've noticed that most of those women who take fertility drugs and become baby factories having 4,5,6 or more kids, most of whom ARE clones(twins, triplets, etc.) popping them out at that same time, most of those families are very religious.
Can someone explain that to me?

Wouldn't it be cool if in such a discussion at least one side had a clue?

From the news article.

quote:
"Ideology has no place when it comes to medical science," Specter told reporters. "There have been attempts by government to stifle science. Galileo was imprisoned because he followed Copernicus who said the world was not flat."

I call ideology in medical science ethics and a lot of people would disagree that it does not have any place there.

I don't feel like commenting on that whole Copernicus thing. Aren't those people supposed to be educated or at least smart enogh not to give themselves away?

For some strange reason I get more disillusioned with our president with every passing day.

I think he may be an example of the value of an Ivy League education. The man got the diploma, and still can't figure out where to stick it.
