As PZ said, it matters not at all. "Consecrated" or not, it's still no more nor less than just another cracker.

There were some pages of the Qur'an amongst the garbage as well. I've yet to read a comment on that. Perhaps the Catholics are afraid the Muslims might come after them for putting PZ up to it.

Religion can be so stupid....

Well, Bill Donohue has issued his fatwa:
“A formal complaint against Myers has already been made. What he did—in both word and deed—constitutes a bias incident, as defined by the University of Minnesota. The policy says that ‘Expressions of disrespectful bias, hate, harassment or hostility against an individual, group or their property because of the individual or group's actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion…can be forms of discrimination. Expressions vary, and can be in the form of language, words, signs, symbols, threats, or actions that could potentially cause alarm, anger, fear, or resentment in others…even when presented as a joke.'

“The University must now take action and apply the appropriate sanction. We are contacting the president, Board of Regents and the Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Office at the school, as well as Minnesota's governor and both houses of the state legislature; the Catholic community in Minnesota is also being contacted. Moreover, we are also contacting Muslim groups nationwide.

“It is important for Catholics to know that the University of Minnesota will not tolerate the deliberate destruction of the Eucharist by one of its faculty. Just as African Americans would not tolerate the burning of a cross, and Jews would not tolerate the display of swastikas, Catholics will not tolerate the desecration of the Eucharist.”
Oh course, PZ didn't harass individuals or destroy their property. He destroyed his own property. Also, racism isn't in quite the same league as mocking a religious belief that people freely choose to adopt. When bigotry includes criticizing ideas and not people, then the term no longer has any useful meaning.

I imagine watching a video on YouTube:
A video documentation from a church where someone is given "the body of Christ", aka Wafer, takes it and runs out of the church. Zooming in on the wafer to make sure the viewer can see what it looks like, then zoom out to see the guy feeding it to a dog. Preferably a dobbermann.
If the dog refuses it, smear on some liver-paste and try feeding it again...

This might come close; evidently the cracker in question was indeed mojoed at by a priest.
#200

I knew the first thing that would happen is that the loons would claim it is a fake cracker. The one I chose to photograph is one that the sender actually provided video documentation of where it came from.

Not that there's any substantial difference between the consecrated and unconsecrated version.

What's really amazing is the total amount of stupid in the comments, especially the people who're saying that Jesus is the atheists' Savior whether they believe it or not (if they don't believe, Jesus won't save them), and those folks who take "nothing is sacred" to mean that everything and everyone is equally worthless.

I knew that thread was going to be monumental, that's why I was quite proud I managed to secure the #2 spot. Unfortunately, in my rush to post, I couldn't think of much worthwhile to say.

I believe as far as PZ is concerned, his point is made and the event is over. We'll see how long Donahue can keep up the movement to get PZ fired. He says he's going to the governor and both houses of the legislature! I could be wrong, but I say passions will die down pretty quick.

It was fun; I enjoyed the ride but it's time to put it to rest before it gets really boring, as these things tend to do. There are a huge number of posts over there that are mirror images and I don't think that anyone has the cerebal fortitude to read them all. My solo post was # 30-something. It should have been in the low 20s but the page moves so fast that there's no telling where one's pearls of wit might end up.

I've no doubt that Donowoohue will try and milk it 'till The Naz shows up for an encore, but that will turn into raw noise and fade away for an exhaustion of interest. Further, it comes to mind that trying to get the state governnent involved smacks of being unconstitutional as well as making him look like a bigger ass than ever.

Bill, you've got to let it go. Your cracker's met it's preordained fate, alas, consigned to the landfill, never to return. Even as I write, some devout seagull has likely recieved the Host and feels little better for the blessing. Life is filled with such minor disappointments, so quit being a chump and suck it up; it's time to move on to a new lunacy.

Hopefully there won't be any serious consequences for PZ (some nut trying to hurt him or his family, getting fired, etc.) If indeed nothing happens, it stands as another beautiful example (others include mockery of religion in pop culture, for example) of our changing society, where it has become increasingly acceptable to openly and even harshly criticize another person's deeply-held religious views. What a shame that skeptics have had to turn to such extreme and, well, frankly rude (the refer to the nail through the wafer) means of "blasphemy" to make the point. Sadly, such rudeness does seem necessary when so many people still assume their religion has some special protection from criticism.

I've had to deal with all kinds of hate mail as the Coordinator for PhillyCoR lately because of the billboard we put up on 95. Thankfully no direct threats yet. But all those shouting, upset ninnies don't mean anything is there's no bite with their bark. If anything, they whine so loud about blasphemy because they see that times have changed and their power is slipping away.

Damnit! I lost my wireless connection for almost a whole day! I couldn't even see the thread until Myers shut it down, much less get in the second bloody comment!

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

As one of the commenters on PZ's blog suggested (paraphrased), sometimes being rude is the right thing to do. It's just important that one not be hypocritically rude, like Bill Donohue.

See what I'm sayin'? It's turned into a foot-race to get a low post number. It doesn't get much duller than that.

Perhaps Donohue will liven things up a bit, but it will be only briefly and then only cover stuff that we already know about and have already laughed away. Although.... he might piss off the ACLU enough to yank his dick-string loose by blantly trying to influence the state government. We can but hope, but even that wouldn't amount to much. This dog is as good as dead.

Not over yet. PZ was quick to link to a new (sadly short) video from Michael Edmonson. Quite funny.

And the UMM chancelor is defending PZ's right to desecrate wafers. Good on her.

(By the way, H.: second place is just the first loooooser. )
