Hmmm.... Interesting. Right Wing Radio's been using this technique to reshape the US political landscape for a couple decades. Now I see a method to Ann Coulter's madness - God, I never thought I'd think something like that...
The Overton window is a concept in political theory, named after the former vice president of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, Joe Overton, who developed the model. It describes a "window" in the range of public reactions to ideas in public discourse, in a spectrum of all possible options on an issue. Overton described a method for moving that window, thereby including previously excluded ideas, while excluding previously acceptable ideas. The technique relies on people promoting ideas even less acceptable than the previous "outer fringe" ideas. That makes those old fringe ideas look less extreme, and thereby acceptable. Delivering rhetoric to define the window provides a plan of action to make more acceptable to the public some ideas by priming them with other ideas allowed to remain unacceptable, but which make the real target ideas seem more acceptable by comparison.
So you guys think desecrating consecrated bread will do the the trick turning public perception against Catholics.... Ok. Good luck.

No, I think it might go some way toward diminishing the privileged status this voodoo holds in today's society.

Ok. Good luck.
Thank you.

In other news: Bill Donohue's latest is bizarre in the extreme. He is obviously trying to manipulate Muslims into doing something against PZ, as well:

MYERS TO DESECRATE EUCHARIST AND KORAN

July 22, 2008

On July 15, Catholic League president Bill Donohue called attention to the way Professor Paul Z. Myers of the University of Minnesota treats Catholicism and Islam: the biologist's pledge to desecrate the Eucharist contrasts starkly with the deference he has shown to Islam.

Now Myers says that "Thanks to all those who have demanded that I treat that silly book [the Koran] with disrespect, I'll have to treat both equally."

Donohue responded today:

"The latest threat by Myers only makes matters worse. Instead of treating Catholicism with the respect he has previously shown for Islam, he now pledges to disrespect Islam the way he pledges to disrespect Catholicism (once again!). This is his idea of equal treatment.

"Much has been written about the moral vacuity that marks the Darwinian vision of society that Myers embraces. He now has a grand opportunity to rebut those critics. Or sustain the perception. So which will it be, Professor Myers? I will let Ibrahim Hooper at the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) know of your latest bluster. And I sincerely implore you to drop both threats now."
He followed it up with PZ's email address, and the email address of CAIR's communications director.

Note the complete fabrication of what PZ "embraces."

PZ says,
This latest round of email is particularly revolting, though. These Catholics are chortling with glee -- they don't have to make death threats anymore, they're just overjoyed that now the Muslims, terrorists all, will give me my comeuppance, and they're all urging them on.

So far, though, the score in number of email tirades is Catholics: 5 digit number, Muslims: 0. Maybe I'll get some islamic hate mail soon, but I suspect that CAIR is more interested in defusing any prejudice that they are all mad bombers...a prejudice Donohue is more interested in promoting.

I've commented on this over at Myer's site...that asshole Donohue is really starting to piss me off.

EDIT:
This is the contact info for the Catholic League from their own website.

Maybe we could put some of that to use?

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

It is tempting to write Donohue off as a complete and utter ass, spit derisively in his general direction, raise a middle finger in ribald salute, and move on to matters of greater moment. However, he's worth paying attention too; after all, his cult and his mindset are the very things that brought Europe the infamy of the Inquisition(s), and lying to for the Christ has always been a popular pastime amongst the devout. He has yet, really, to do his best to mount some sort of offensive against Myers and anyone who travels with him.

It is very important to him that he do so. If he cannot get PZ fired or attacked by the Muslim lunatic fringe, there is the distinct possibility that his rhetoric will convince some loosely-hinged cracker-muncher to take up the slack. And failing that, there are plenty of Protestants that could be inspired by him to attack the godless for Jesus, leaving his own hands semi-clean. And from his point of view, the attack, physical or not, would enhance his position in the Church Militant. He will have fought valiantly for the Faith.

Never forget: taken as a whole, H. s. sapiens is a species of idiots who seldom listen to any but the loudest voice.

That'd be a bad idea, as it would almost guarantee a "now the atheists are attacking me" whine from Donohue.

By the way, the latest from PZ includes this:
Nice people, these Catholics. If Mr Moore shows up at my door, the only people who will be meeting him are the local police.
And then the comments quickly devolve into a guns-in-the-home debate.

Tune in tomorrow at this same station to learn the ultimate fate of Captain Cracker, hero of the Faith, savior of the Church!
Yes, the sad little cracker has met its undignified end, so stop pestering me. The cracker, the koran, and another surprise entry have been violated and are gone. You'll have to wait until tomorrow for the details, what little of them there are. I must quickly apologize to all you good Catholics who were hoping to attend Mass, since you can't anymore — I have been told many hundreds of times now that cracker abuse violates your right to practice your religion. I guess you'll have to adapt. Secular humanism is a good alternative, if you aren't already flocking to join the Mormons.
And if you think that this is going to be the end of it, think again.

From Crunchy Con, we get abuse of the words "damage," "Satanic," "diabolical," "persecute" and "hatred." We even get the intolerance of someone who thinks that Muslims will do PZ worse than the Catholics have (just because they're Muslims). We also get this:
It's plain that the raging of Christians only feeds Myers' hatred. But what would he do if the response to his hideous blasphemy is ... love? What would he do if Catholics and other Christians, and even sympathetic members of other faiths, turned up en masse on his campus simply to pray quietly for him? What kind of witness would that be to the wider culture? How might that make straight the path to salvation for P.Z. Myers, and many who now admire him? Wouldn't that be blessing those who persecute you, as Christ commands us to do?
I'm pretty sure if people turned up to pray for PZ, he'd laugh at them, too (which would probably spark a whole 'nother round of nastygrams).

Morons. If they understood their own religion, something like this would be the only acceptable response, if there even was one. Of course they shouldn't be trying to pass laws to legislate compliance with religous dogma either, which would probably have a priori made the whole thing moot since PZ wouldn't be fucking with them. The whole basis of faith is preservation of freedom to choose, so if you make laws against sin, then aren't you doing something god itself intentionally refused to do? Talk about blasphemy....

Well done, PZ, and very well told!

I note that the first comment was "May God have mercy...." something as meaningless and as useless as the cracker.

I'm sure someone will say that he photoshopped that because he wouldn't risk the Wrath of The All-Loving God.

Why, because it didn't bleed? But no need to wonder:
I knew the first thing that would happen is that the loons would claim it is a fake cracker. The one I chose to photograph is one that the sender actually provided video documentation of where it came from.

Not that there's any substantial difference between the consecrated and unconsecrated version.
