The Ethical Atheist on PZ Myers' "contribution to a stereotype." I've left a comment.

I liked your comment, Dave. I think the blogger's analysis is flawed.

I thought that The Great Desecration was a little over the top, but have no problems with it, and do not think it will have an adverse effect on the atheist community (we are looked upon as worse than the worst already). And the obvious hypocrisy of the Faithful, as pointed out PZ himself and others, falls on deaf ears, as they march to drumbeat of their Masters.

An organized month of prayer for PZ..... Seems a little extreme for just one heathen, doesn't it? It also seems a sad waste of prayer as well as time; there are a lot of believers who need & would appreciate such a thing along with a little actual help. But maybe that wouldn't be as much fun as having an adversary, albeit a relativly powerless one.

I dunno. It's all very strange, this religion thing.

Ed Brayton's got some more news on this: those bastards are not just going after Myers or the guy who took the cookie...yeah, this is getting insane.

But this gets much worse. Now a Catholic student group is going after Benjamin Collard, a friend of Cook's who was with him at the church service but didn't do anything at all.

"I tried to look at my class schedule," Collard said. "There was a hold placed on my account that I couldn't sign up for classes. I went to the office of Student conduct to see what was going on and they told me Catholic Campus Ministries filed charges against me."

Collard learned that he has been charged with misconduct, disruptive conduct and giving false identification, the exact same charges as Webster.

Collard has been silent since the episode but when he learned of the charges, he decided he'd be silent no longer.

He said during the incident he sat silently while everything else around him was happening.

"I didn't talk to anybody, didn't say anything," he said. "While the situation, disruption happened, I was sitting in my seat looking forward, I did nothing."

"I never spoke to a university official, I never lied about who I was," Collard added. "I never engaged in any disruptive conduct. I just think this is absolutely disgusting that they're going after me."

Now Collard has been swept up in the middle of the controversy with Cook and both students fighting for their future at the university.

"Just being associated with this can affect my future," Collard said. "I had nothing to do with this."

Both students face expulsion, suspension or probation. A hearing is scheduled for next week.

Fortunately, at Brayton's link, he's got places listed you can write to to try to stop this bullshit!

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Yeah, Brayton is echoing PZ's call for emails two days ago. They've got the same contact link for the President of UCF.

Hey, check out Catholic Campus Ministry Association's Code of Ethics (my bolding):
We, the members of the Catholic Campus Ministry Association, profess the dignity and sanctity of all individuals...

...Although called to serve the Catholic community, we will not restrict our ministry to persons of a particular age, gender, race, creed, physical ability or sexual orientation...

...We adhere to appropriate interpersonal boundaries in relating with those we serve...

...We commit ourselves to providing a safe and healthy environment in which to conduct our ministry. This environment would be free of any form of harassment...

...We will relate with others in ways that respect their dignity as persons and their freedom of conscience without compromising our own beliefs...

...We recognize the privileged relationship we have with the people we serve and promise them acceptance and confidentiality...
It would be interesting to see if CCMA elects to revoke certification of anyone at UCF.

CCM at UCF seems to have been in a bit of hot water themselves from the traditionalists in the area:

A recent advertisement for the University of Central Florida's Catholic Campus Ministry (sponsored by the Orlando diocese) contained an image of "Buddy Christ." This blasphemous image of our Lord was used in the movie "Dogma" in which among other things, attacks the Mass, The Church, God, The Blessed Virgin Mary's virginity, etc. according to reviews at the Internet Movie Database. In fact, the movie is so blasphemous that the Catholic League released a booklet against this film.
And while earlier stories had claimed that the Diocese of Orlando had nothing to say regarding Webster Cook, CCM at UCF is now reporting on their homepage:
MATTER OF DESECRATION OF THE EUCHARIST AS PUBLICIZED ON WFTV: On June 29, the Solemnity of Sts. Peter & Paul, a UCF student acted in a manner that desecrated the Eucharist during the celebration of Mass hosted by Catholic Campus Ministry in the Student Union Building. The act of desecration is being investigated by representatives of the Diocese and the University of Central Florida. An opportunity for reparation through prayer and adoration of the Eucharist is being planned.
I can't find anything on the Diocese's own Website, though, except a non-accusatory reminder that the celebration of the Eucharist and Communion is the "summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the fount from which all the Church's power flows."

I think I may sprain my eyes from rolling them so much.

So what do you do for a sprained eye? Cold pack and a splint?

A couple of beers might work.

Aren't you on a fitness program? Beer intake, sadly, should be limited.

I guess you could just hold a cold beer to your eye though.

So, use the beer as a combo cold-pack/splint/peril-sensitive device!

Indeed.

You might need beer goggles to make any sense out of what this Collard guy is being exposed to.

The Confraternity of Catholic Clergy doesn't like PZ Myers.

Especially funny:
