The new de facto leader of the Presidential race, Sen. John McCain, was unaware of the development until told about it by a reporter. When asked how he felt about Obama quitting, McCain replied: “Senator Obama would like to fool the American people that he is the quitter in this race. He's not. I already quit in 2005, well before Obama even thought of quitting. That's quitting you can believe in.” |

Fuck; can't say I can blame him. Although the fly tickets to Canada are a nice touch. Indeed, maybe the best thing to do for the country at that point... ;p |
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. That's one of the funniest things I've ever read. And you gotta wonder if those thoughts are not somewhere in Barack's mind.
Then, again, when FDR took office, the economy was already on the skids. And I can't express how deeply my father still loves Roosevelt for giving direction and heart to people during the Depression. But let's hope things don't get as bad as back then, for us, or for the next President, even if it might give him an opportunity for lasting fame.

Mooner.....
My memories of the Great Depression reach back to about 1933 when I was five years old. Times were really tough. My dad was extremely fortunate to have a pretty good job in a pretty stable industry - the utility business - and we were better off than many folks. But even though we had considerably more income than most, my folks economized on everything. We didn't go hungry, but we weren't living very high on the hog during those Depression years, either. Good times didn't really come back until the advent of the Second World War, when the wartime economy produced good jobs and good pay for anyone who could work - even though 11 million men were under arms!
I personally think there is about a 50/50 chance that this recession will slide into a 21st century version of the Great Depression within a year or two. With the recent comeback of the Dow, I'm selling pretty heavily and hedging in gold at 7-8 (I think it will hit $1k/oz again soon, I intend to sell at about a 20% profit and expect it to go back down if the recession trend stablizes)
Cash or it's equivilant should be everybody's best friend for the immediate present. If there are no more market crashes in the next 3-6 months, I indend to get back into the market cautiously. |
