Rioting and Looting Continue, as President Obama Calls for Calm

Washington DC, January 22, 2009 (CPS) -- A visibly shaken President Barack Obama today held his first improvised news conference at a secure a undisclosed location. The President urged calm, and promised to quickly replace the Supreme Court justices who were killed in riots yesterday. He promised a "full-court press" by the Justice Department to get the late Chief Executive George W. Bush's unprecedented pardon declared null and void.

There goes the White House.

The White House building was overwhelmed and burned by thousands of angry rioters on Tuesday. Bush's body has not yet been recovered from the smoldering ruins.

President Obama calls for calm.

Flames continued in the Capitol Building, the White House, and the Supreme Court Building. Fires along K Street, the location of many lobbying firms, continued unabated, as troops and firefighters fought to approach and save some of the most important national landmarks and office buildings. Chaos also reigned across the entire country. Hundreds of cities, including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and Seattle were ablaze and completely lawless.

As President Obama spoke to the American people, he explained the cause of the current crisis.
"When former President George Bush pardoned himself two days ago, he foisted the last of his many tragedies upon this country. Either through incompetence or through spite -- and it's always been hard to tell which motivated him -- the wording of his self-serving pardon was so broad that it pardoned everyone for all Federal crimes past, present or future. An 'anything goes' attitude has enveloped the criminal element in this country, and has spread to normally law-abiding citizens. As your President, let me make this clear: The United States is and will continue to be ruled by law. My Administration will immediately seek to have the Bush pardon declared invalid by the highest courts of our land. Meanwhile, and people must understand this, no Presidential pardon has any effect upon state or local laws. People who are looting, murdering and burning outside of Federal jurisdiction are doing so under completely false premises of supposed immunity. They can and will be arrested and prosecuted."
The President also called for the immediate cessation of any further release of Federal prisoners prior to their terms.

One problem confronting the President is that the Supreme Court Building itself was destroyed, and at least some of its Justices are believed dead in yesterday's rioting. Other Federal courts around the country have also been destroyed.

The chaos which has spread througout America began within minutes of the publuication by the Bush White House this Tuesday of a Presidential pardon. According to former White House staff, George W. Bush took it upon himself to personally draft the pardon, after asking for a copy of Gerald Ford's 1974 pardon of Richard Nixon to use as a guide. The pertinent portion of the Bush pardon reads as follows:
Now, therefore, I, George W. Bush, President of the United States, pursuant to the pardon power conferred upon me by Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution, have granted and by these presents do grant a full, free, and absolute pardon unto myself, George W. Bush, and all others, for all offenses against the United States which they have committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from July (January) 20, 2001 through through perpetuity.

In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this eighteenth day of January, in the year of our Lord two thousand and nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-second.

Don't think I'd call that'n funny, old friend It has a certain, horrid prescience about it. Could it happen? I dunno -- this is, after all, the American Sheep we're discussing here -- but history tells us that similar has happened, and the American Sheep ain't as ovine as they once were.

Is Bush stupid enough to pardon himself and his henchmen? Again, dunno; he's pretty stupid.

If we find the body, dibs on the head! I'm moving to new digs this spring and will freeze it until then. I'm planning to set up a vulture feeder and it will make a nice starter meal for them. And if they won't eat it, a possibility, I'll have the joy of watching it rot.

I posted the above partly out of a desire to get my prediction that Bush will pardon himself and his crew writ in stone before it happens. I hope to hell my prediction is wrong, because I want that gang put on trial.

I don't actually predict the other details above. Americans aren't quite that prone to flipping out en mass, and the particular pardon wording would be unlikely, because Bush would give the drafting of the pardon to an attorney. W's probably too lazy to cut-and-paste his own pardon.

Wow! I was wrong about Bush pardoning himself. (Like this was the first time my predictions have gone awry.) All I can say is that Bush was a fool not to have made his prosecution impossible.
