If schools had given the option for kids to opt out of George W. Bush's speeches, the GOP would have called them "unpatriotic."

You answered it with bold falsehoods and seem indifferent to them being falsehoods. This is one of the big problems in the country today. Not that lies are being spread around, but that people don't care whether what they parrot is true or not.

Why bother giving your children a good education, Robb, if you're also going to instill in them a sense that truth doesn't matter?

You posted some very bold accusations against some of the president's advisors, but you have failed to support those allegations Robb. You have also ignored the refutation of some of those accusations.

Show me video or a transcript that has anyone working for the president advocating "forced abortions" (your words), and I'll join you in calling for that person to be fired.

You have been asked multiple times for this info. So you should provide it or admit your error.

You were once better than this. It's a genuine shame to see you disintegrating.

Again resorting to name calling?
Actually, no. I didn't call you any names, but expressed my sad observation that you are in the process of drinking the wingnut Kool-Aid. And I explained why I think this.

Crazy stuff. I do wish Oldrmann would have just let Beck's words do the talking. Beck is so crazy, that Oldermann's commentary (funny as it was) could not top Beck's own rant for laugh out loud loonyness. But I love the inclusion of the scene from Blazing Saddles.

I just don't know why even Fox keeps that whackaloon around.

Agreed. Beck was as funny as funny gets, not needing any commentary from Olbermann. Murdoch must really love this guy, to keep him on the air despite all the sponsors Fox has lost due to Beck's glaring insanity. Maybe Murdoch's just as Howard-Hughes-crazy himself.

Here's Beck's whole psychotic rant as first shown, without Olbermann's commentary. I think the guy really is clinically wacko. Like so many paranoids I've known, he is filled with manic energy as he rolls out a large number of "facts," and claims to see malevolent, secret connections between them, connections that mere ordinary people somehow miss.

LOL! I usually can't stand Keith Obermann, but that link from Kil made me laugh my ass off.

Yeah, Glen Beck is a special sort of idiot.

On the whole "forced abortions" thing - I recently had to deal with someone's mindless rant about John Holdren, Obama's "Science Czar" endorsing forced abortions and sterilizations, among many other horrible things. On further inquiry, the "evidence" presented was quotes mined from a quite dated and obsolete academic book Holdren co-authored in the 70's called "Ecoscience."

http://www.scienceprogress.org/2009/07/hold-of-holdren-again/ From that article:

“However, to describe these measures is different from advocating them. And in fact, the Ehrlichs and Holdren concluded by arguing that noncoercive measures were what they suppported: ‘A far better choice, in our view, is to expand the use of milder methods of influencing family size preferences' —such as birth control and access to abortions. In fairness, their text does read as dated today, ripe for quote mining. They were writing in very different times thirty years ago; but even if they were defending these positions then (and they weren't), that hardly means that they do today.”

Holdren's appointment included a Senate hearing. Here is his statement to the Senate: http://commerce.senate.gov/public/_files/JohnHoldrenSenatetestimony_21009.pdf His priorities over and over again are in investing in new technologies which will both boost the economy by encouraging private investments, creation of jobs, and in some cases protect the environment. During the question and answer session which followed, Holdren was asked about his writings from 30 years ago. He stated unequivocally that he does not believe that government should have a role in determining optimal population size and that he has never endorsed forced sterilization. Holdren's appointment was unanimously approved by the Senate committee. He is by no means any kind of extremist and controversy over him and many other Obama appointees is completely fabricated.

I'd laugh more at people like Glen Beck if so many people didn't take him so fuckin' seriously. Since so many apparently do, and his rants are changing the way people view things, turning things which are totally benign into signs that we're about to turn into the next North Korea, I laugh, but mostly so I don't cry.

We have real freakin' problems in this country! We need to focus on solving those problems, not worrying about stupid Bogeymen!

Okay, it looks like the speech is finished already. "Prepared remarks," the White House is calling it. And yes, it is being used to indoctrinate children:
Thank you, God bless you, and God bless America.
The horror!

Pretty subversive, Commie-Nazi Hitler Youth type stuff:
But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world – and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.
Parents can't take the chance of letting the President tell kids to listen to their parents!

Wow. That speech is great. I think it would be great if Obama starts a tradition and future Presidents follow by addressing children. Children should be engaged by politicians. They should be made to feel like they are an important part of the country. Patriotism shouldn't just be feelings and symbols. It should be about practical action and a balance between a sense of social and personal responsibility.

I don't even want to think about how this transcript is going to be twisted into something ridiculous by wingnuts.

My mom is a high school teacher and received an email from a parent who wants his teenage daughter removed from the class during the address. And in my home town in Ohio - which is hardly a hotbed of conservatism - the public schools have decided to not air the address. Can anyone imagine stuff like this happening if Bush (or any other past president) wanted to give an address expressing positive ideas to children? This is insane.

I can't believe the influence the wingnuts have. It is truly disgusting.

I went to high school for a while with one of Frank Wolf's kids, and the Congressman paid our Virginia History class a visit one day. I'm pretty sure that this was when I was in 9th grade, and probably a year or so after the Congressman took office. The one thing I remember from his discussion with us is that because we were all 15 or 16 years old, we weren't important to him, since we couldn't yet vote. If my hazy memories are correct, it was an "I'm not going to bother answering your questions" kind of "not important." In other words, the polar opposite of "engaged with."

Think the wingnuts will apologize?

My bet is they will now just ignore this speech and continue assassinating the character of anyone in the Obama admin.
