I thought it was quite a good speech, even inspiring. I don't think it was extraordinary, and it will never shut the shitheads up (what will?), but anyone else with the ability to reason should be satisfied with it.

I thought it was a strong speech. I liked how he mentioned some occupations and then a few more and more while emphasizing that all these careers are achievable by staying in school.
(I also liked it when he mentioned "critical thinking". Republicans hate it when people discover "critical thinking" and pursue reality.) |
Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

| Predictable, really. But the only people who'll buy into that nonsense are the knee-jerk wingnuts, brain-dead honky supremacists and similar, mindless fools, and most of rest the country doesn't care. They have other, more pressing matters to worry about, such as "putting food on their famlies" in this aftermath of the Bush disaster.
Here's the Rude Pundit: 9/08/2009 The End of the School Speech "Controversy" (For Now):
When Barack Obama makes his mundane speech on studying hard in school in a little while, it'll be the end of one chapter of one of the most idiotic right wing uproars in a while. With all the dignity, wisdom, and precision of a room filled with diapered toddlers and sharp knives, some conservatives have manipulated people's simple-minded, uninformed idiocy for their own gain. And it ain't like the people have responded gracefully. Like iguanas at breeding season, fucking in scaly madness, parents and politicians alike have given us a mountain of lies and crazed conspiracy theories. Fox "news" has been, as usual, Nutzoid Central, caressing this completely manufactured controversy like a swollen clitoris sore from so much rubbing.
Here's Rick Santorum on Fox "news" last Friday: "[T]o many parents in particular, it's a little threatening to have someone come in who's so polished, who's so cool and come in front of their kids. And then when you see the curriculum, you see some of the things that have been said that he might be -- might be talking about, which are all about him, it's just -- it's a little creepy. It just -- it's a little unsettling for parents." Remember: the guy calling something "creepy" is the same dude who was "kissing and cuddling" the fetus his wife miscarried, having his kids do the same. He even sang it a lullaby.
| It looked to me like the right speech at the right time, and was there ever a speech or a writing that didn't get punched up a little at the last minute? I very much doubt it.
I'm looking forward to tomorrow's. Rumor has it that it'll be a barn-burner.

Well, did The One dissolve the Congress and impose martial law after the speech yet? Did we manage to survive as a nation intact with all of what is left of our rights from this diabolical and insidious propaganda screed?
I mean, the brainwashing was so complete that even Laura Bush and the Newt both approve of the speech!

Yeah, they are taking credit for making Obama give a speech that matches the described content that was posted weeks ago on the department of education website.
So, in essence, they are saying they made Obama do what he was already going to do.
Honestly, its a fucking brilliant political tactic. It isn't grounded even slightly in reality, it so big a lie that you can't respond quickly to it, etc...

I dont think brilliant applies unless they did it on purpose, frankly I think they actually believe this nonsense. |

Robb, where the hell are you man? Don't have the personal strength of character to come back here and admit your "concern" was completely unfounded?

Dave: I went to high school for a while with one of Frank Wolf's kids, and the Congressman paid our Virginia History class a visit one day. I'm pretty sure that this was when I was in 9th grade, and probably a year or so after the Congressman took office. The one thing I remember from his discussion with us is that because we were all 15 or 16 years old, we weren't important to him, since we couldn't yet vote. If my hazy memories are correct, it was an "I'm not going to bother answering your questions" kind of "not important." In other words, the polar opposite of "engaged with." | Damn - he actually told you that you're questions weren't important and wouldn't answer them? Why did he visit your class in the first place? |

I remember him asking the class something along the lines of "why aren't your interests important to me?" and one of the kids answering "because we can't vote," and Wolf agreed with that. Why did he visit your class in the first place? | Because one of his kids was in my class, so the teacher (it was a Virginia and US history class) had a more-or-less direct line to the man at back-to-school night (at the very least). |

| Yep, that's exactly what they're saying. Had a conversation with my Mother yesterday who listens to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity all day long. She asked if my kid's school showed them the speech and I said not yet, but I went on youtube and played it for them and I thought it was a great speech. She says: "Well you know, that's not the original speech. They changed it when everyone got upset." WTF? Are politics in this country getting worse every day or am I just stuck in the moment???? |

No, seriously, I want to know if they are running around trying to kill granny with an "Obama Youth Death Panel".
Have they reported you to the though police yet?

I heard on one of BBC's radio channels reporting about this, and one mother was apparently very upset about Obama indoctrinating the kids. They didn't ask what's so horrible about promoting education, and why it is ok for Reagan to speak to school kids about tax cuts. |
