Why would you want to? However, in the university now there are 'soft' sciences like social science, politics, psychology, who as Feynman describes go though the formalisms of science, but they're not really doing science ..... however we generally, without thinking, transfer the respect we have for the hard scientists, the physicists, engineers, mathematicians, etc., to the 'soft' scientists, the social scientists, the political scientists, the psychologists .... etc. It ain't warranted. These people, intelligent as they are, are not scientists and their results, no matter how many times confirmed and accepted as the 'consensus', are are often just total nonsense. | Things have come a long way in the 44 years since Feynman gave that speech. At least for the sociologists and psychologists. But again, this has nothing to with Holocaust denialism, it's just a round-about attempt to bash all consensus views. |

Ole Dave W. maintains his perfect 000 batting average One of the things that's been getting a lot of play lately is a new book about the idiocy of the psychoactive drugs Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America .... since their appearance on the scene in the mid 80s psychiatric disabilities have tripled... psychology/psychiatry is a perfect example of COMPLETE PSEUDOSCIENCE .....

So Rudolfo, when will you get round to answering my questions? As I said, if you think you already answered them you can point me to the spot in the thread where you did so. |

Nice job of cherry picking. What you have linked to is a new book that has pretty much only been reviewed by the media and not all of that has been favorable.
Tying the rise in mental illness to drugs used in its treatment
As it happens, the science of psychology is wide in scope and a difficult science. Still, it's evidence based and the empirical evidence for the causes and treatment of different disorders has improved dramatically in the last hundred years.
I'm in no position to criticize one book, but I can say that it's a leap to suggest that psychotropic drugs have caused an increase in mental illness. That argument doesn't take into account such things as improved diagnostic techniques or count the number of people who's lives have been greatly improved with the use of psychotropic medications. The same argument is being made by the anti-vax crowd and autism, which also doesn't take into account better diagnostic techniques, earlier diagnosis, and a broader set of symptoms that are now included on the autism spectrum.
On any subject, you can find a dissenting opinion. That's easy. But to hold that opinion up as the last word on the subject, because it confirms your bias, is both lazy and stupid. But that is what you do. That's what you have done since you arrived here, Rudolfo.
You really don't know history from pseudo-history any better than you know science from pseudo-science.

http://www.amazon.com/Anatomy-Epidemic-Bullets-Psychiatric-Astonishing/dp/0307452417 | Again, Rudolfo demonstrates for us all the importance of Feynman's first principle. Rudolfo has fooled himself into thinking that psychology and psychiatry are the same thing, and he has fooled himself into thinking that one popular-press book can show that "psychology/psychiatry is a perfect example of COMPLETE PSEUDOSCIENCE," especially when the reviews of that one book make it clear that that certainly isn't Whitaker's point. So this is really just another example of Rudolfo taking other people's statements to patently ridiculous extremes. |

Interesting as this portion of the thread is, can we move this and make it a new topic? This part really has nothing to do with holocaust denial. |

| No reason to. Rudolfo just dropped in to embarrass us. Once again he embarrassed himself instead. He doesn't understand the Feynman quote that he mined, and probably knows nothing about psychology or he wouldn't have made such a stupid remark about it. He was just using those things as a "Gotcha" moment, which he failed at miserably... |

And he still hasn't answered my questions, or pointed me to where he answered them. I'm starting to think he doesn't have any answers to them, but that would be silly of course... |

Who? Oh, him. I don't think we should pay any attention to him. Why should we bother playing with someone who makes his own rules?
I'm just saying that the question of how much medication is necessary should be considered as a separate topic. But if you want to give him his own corner for an overextended time-out, that's your right as a founder. |

Believe it or not I'm not trying to embarrass you, only you can do that
I'm trying to give you a clue as to what constitutes critical thinking ...
Here's a little insight into the 'skeptics' phenomenon from another holohoax denier .... "They think they're so smart because they don't believe in Uri Geller. LOL" To which I can only add ....
I mean really, that's on the mark.
You seem to think that this sort of juvenile 'skepticism' represents thought, but it doesn't, it's just parroting the 'experts' ... i.e. the opposite of skepticism, and as Feynman notes, the opposite of science.
For crying out loud, Feynman spells it out so that even a baby can understand .... and still you're crying .... ..... better get out the beanies for the babies .... here's one for Dave W. , one for Kil , one for filthy , and more for the rest of the crew ... No fighting now, there's one for each of you ! |

And we also have examples of you lying about what the "experts" say, so you've gone above and beyond. You've built a rickety bamboo patio, convinced yourself that it's an airstrip, and are waiting for the cargo planes to land....i.e. the opposite of skepticism, and as Feynman notes, the opposite of science. | That's what we've been saying about what you've been doing this whole time. For crying out loud, Feynman spells it out so that even a baby can understand... | And you seem to be unable to. The irony in your complaints is thick, yet you can't see it at all.
And for the last couple of days, you haven't addressed the topics of any of your threads, you've only come here to be insulting. Rule 1 all over the place. |

Eh, let him troll. Troll-bashing is fun and should be encouraged. Here's a little insight into the 'skeptics' phenomenon from another holohoax denier ....
