I read not long go that a study of wind records along the Atlantic coast showed that offshore turbines could provide 24 hour grid power. How much depends how many machines there are. Because periods of no wind were local and at no time was there no wind collectively.

Here is an article about the wind potential for China. Why should this just apply to China? Of course Global oil companies know this too. Any engineering company can compete on building wind generators. The holder of an oil lease has no competition, they have a monopoly geographically. That same logic is why your local electricity providers do not want you to have solar electric power on your roof. Your power company holds a monopoly on supplying their customers (you). Just like BP doesn't want competition , neither does your electricity provider, they are a much smaller player, that is locked into you wallet, just like BP. If your dollars for energy are spent elsewhere their monopoly would evaporate, into thin air. At least greatly. Renewable is economical now. My boat, my home, has not been connected to a grid since 2002, I get my electricity from the sun, fact!

Most, no all, americans would have to adjust somewhat but it is doable and would be considered a no brainer after they are adjusted to it. It can be applied and it works. If you think about it, Oil, coal, hydro, wind, all energy on this plant comes from our Sun.

All except one, anyone want to name it? Hint, there are life forms that exclusively get their energy/food input from this source. We can harness this source without effecting these life forms. SS

Hydrothermal vent energy, or whatever that's called? I believe Iceland relies on that to some extent, but how much could the rest of the world access it?

Anyway, I found something else: Guess what else BP has screwed up?

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

Yellowstone should have geothermal energy enough for North America.

Yes ignored, I was referring to hydrothermal vents and how the closed ecosystem that strives there gets their energy from chemicals emitting from the vent, not the heat.
From wiki under 'hydrothermal vents ecosystem' it states

Chemosynthetic archaea form the base of the food chain, supporting diverse organisms, including giant tube worms, clams, limpets and shrimp.

The energy Iceland is harnessing is heat based. It's used as steam to spin turbines, driving generators. Which is all together different.
Yellowstone is quite active but there are vast areas in the US that would support geothermal plants, not just near Yellowstone. Any area that has hot springs are regions where wells could be drilled cheaply for heat extraction. Over half of the US and at a depth of 3km (under 2 mi)you can find temps of 100^C min.. Of course there is no interest in developing small scale geothermal on a scale of 5 or 10 kw, only mega watt plants are being considered. The larger plants 10 or 50 mw are more restricted as to where they will work. I have no clue why wind and surface solar schemes are favored more than geothermal, which would produce electric power 24/7, is inexhaustible and without any pollution if done properly. Drilling a couple 3km wells are not that difficult today. No doubt the extreme initial investment is high, requiring decades to recoup but greener you can't find. No doubt affected by the desire for faster quick returns, than slower long termed returns. SS
