PZ has gone on strike.

Greg Laden is on strike, too, along with Casaubon's Book and Dynamics of Cats.

People who've left since yesterday: Questionable Authority, Superbug (new/old digs), Thus Spake Zuska (new digs) and Living the Scientific Life (new digs).

Respectful Insolence (one of my faves) is still dithering.

So, four bloggers are on strike (including the biggest traffic generator), 18 blogs have left for sure, two were gone before Pepsi, and another dozen or so haven't been active in a long time. So maybe 36 out of 86 blogs are simply inactive or dead.

I also would like to point out that I think PZ's strike is an effort to save ScienceBlogs by giving bloggers an option to voice their displeasure without having to resort to quitting outright. It will be interesting to see how SB responds.

If you're a regular reader of any of the blogs that are on strike, and you want to respect the strike, my suggestion would be to look at the last 24 hours on Sb to check for activity and/or an end to the strike. If you were to check (for example) Pharyngula's main page over and over again, those checks will count as page hits (and thus advertiser revenue) for that particular blog, which is what the strikers want to curb. Checking just the last 24 hours gives page hits, too, but they're not specific and they'll be fewer in number (one look at that page can tell you whether there's been activity on any of the four striking blogs, for example).

Or, you can just ignore Sb altogether, doing the most possible damage to their bottom line, and find out here when the strike ends.

Just sayin'.

Tomorrow's Table is reporting that PZ's strike is working:
PZ has posted a demand for some changes from the Seed management.

All are reasonable and helpful and will make ScienceBlogs a better place. It seems Seed management agrees and soon the changes will be implemented.
So much so (apparently) that Dynamics of Cats has ended its striking already.

And Myrmecos is moving back to old digs, with a nice message:
Don't read too much into this change of address. Scienceblogs is having a tough run at present, true, but the biggest impetus is simply that I liked blogging on the old platform more than the present one. And, I was never able to overcome the feeling that Scienceblogs and Myrmecos were not quite the right combination of network and blog.

I've been a regular Scienceblogs reader since the early days in 2006 and hope to remain so. Behind the scenes, significant changes are afoot on the part of both bloggers and management that make me optimistic Scienceblogs will pull through the current difficulties. I want them to succeed, but I also recognize that I do not need to be an active participant in that process.

Those who have abandoned SEED have formed Scientopia.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.
