Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is shot and killed in Tuscon. Many others were hit as well.

The latest says that she isn't dead but in surgery. An aide, however, was killed and several bystanders wounded.
Nothing yet on a possible motive of the shooter, who used an automatic weapon, but the media has already begun to draw a link to Sarah Palin's "Don't retreat...reload" campaign.
During the fall campaign, Sarah Palin, the former Republican vice-presidential candidate, posted a controversial map on her Facebook page depicting spots where Democrats were running for re-election; those Democrats were noted by crosshairs symbols like those seen through the scope of a gun. Ms. Giffords was among those on Ms. Palin’s map. |

Tragic. At least they got the murderer in custody. There is now the possibility of finding out his motivations. I wonder where the blame falls, and what kind of political aftermath... An attack on a democratically elected representative is an attack on democracy itself, an attack on USA as a nation.

At least they got the guy, alive and in one piece. That's become rare. One hopes he enjoys his new life, for as long as it lasts.
First shot in a civil war? Nah; he's just another nut case. But I wonder: does the scumbag have milita or Klan ties?
I look forward to the day when Palin finally learns to keep her stupid yap shut. The idiot is evolving from a humorous nuisance to rapidly becoming more trouble than she's worth.
Wishing Ms. Giffords and the other still living victims of this asshole a speedy and total recovery.

MSNBC has a link to what they say is one of his Youtube videos, but they say it's unconfirmed. It seems to be a rambling incoherent diatribe that doesn't make his political leanings clear, but he says on it that he will not trust in any god. So now we wait for the right wingers to blame atheistic evil for this incident.

| I've read about that. The guy's a complete screwball and probably very easy to tip over the edge.
On a better note, Ms. Giffords is out of surgery and the doctors are optomistic. I've known a couple of 'Nam vets who suffered sever head wounds and came away from it pretty well, so there's some hope.

My condolences to the families of the deceased, and wishes for recovered productivity for the victims.

My look at Jared Lee Loughner's reported diatribes on MySpace and YouTube leads me to think he's primarily motivated by schizophrenia, not politics.
Loughner mentions the Constitution and seems to conclude that the USA and the Constitution itself are "unconstitutional," but does so in such an incoherent and disjointed manner that mental illness is almost certainly at play. I didn't see any indication of teabagger ideas in any of what he said. I suspect he's just another really crazy man with a gun, and I think that's a reasonable default position to take, at least until any contradictory information comes to light. |

It is now being said that Loughner may not have acted alone, and that is being investigated. This raises the question of: how hard is it to convince a dingbat to do your dirty work? Could it be that he was a cat's paw? I dunno.
I am also curious as to the pistol. They say that it has an extended magazine, so I'm assuming that it is a 9mm. Long clips are easily found for many of these as well as for the Colt 1911-A .45.
I have a much more serious question: How did this pathetic nudnik get his confused hands on a firearm in the first place? Did he purchase it legally or have someone else buy it for him, steal it, or what?
At last report, Ms. Giffords is in a medically induced coma and will be kept there for several days.

Is a gun store clerk capable of assessing the sanity of a purchaser? If they're looking wild-eyed and rambling about evil government plots and such, yeah, but many people on the verge of committing an act like this are outwardly normal. You can train a bartender to assess if a customer is inebriated and therefore should no longer be served, but that's comparatively easy. |

| I've just read that he bought the weapon legally from a dealer. I had thought, silly me, that the waiting period was supposed to weed out the drunks, skunks and dingbats. Evidently not.

Maybe he was taking his meds when he bought it.
The gun dealers I know locally would not sell to a guy like this if they even suspected he was that fucking crazy.
This guy's motivations aside, I think it speaks volumes that Palin removed the "target" map from her website the instant this shooting was reported. They have just admitted to knowing that they are over the line with their rhetoric.
