O'Conner retires. quote: O'Connor Retires From Supreme Court
By GINA HOLLAND The Associated Press Friday, July 1, 2005; 12:21 PM
WASHINGTON -- Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman on the Supreme Court and a swing vote on abortion as well as other contentious issues, announced her retirement Friday. A bruising Senate confirmation struggle loomed as President Bush pledged to name a successor quickly.
"It has been a great privilege indeed to have served as a member of the court for 24 terms," the 75-year-old justice wrote Bush in a one-paragraph resignation letter. "I will leave it with enormous respect for the integrity of the court and its role under our constitutional structure."
Little more than an hour later, Bush praised O'Connor as "a discerning and conscientious judge and a public servant of complete integrity." He said he would recommend a replacement who will "faithfully interpret the Constitution and laws of our country."
I wonder; will Bush actually pick an honest jurior, or will he go with his political base and chose some intellectual pipsqueak on the basis of his religious beliefs?
And I further wonder; if the latter, will the Democrats in Congress grow some cods?
Anybody gonna start a book on it?

It appears GWB is the only one who likes the idea...
quote: Conservatives fear Gonzales will be another in a long line of Supreme Court justices who have proved more liberal than the president who appointed them expected -- John Paul Stevens, Sandra Day O'Connor, Anthony Kennedy, David Souter. That is a view widely held inside the White House, but not by the occupant who counts most. George W. Bush loves Al Gonzales and would like his former chief counsel to head a "Gonzales Court."

I don't know anything about Alberto Gonzales. What are the pros and cons? What other alternatives are there? |

Maybe this will help... http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/3171519
Personally, my belief is that the admin will nominate an ethnic minirity like Gonzales or a woman with a political ideology somewhere in the neighborhood of John Ashcroft's. Then, if the Dems fillibuster they can scream racism or misogyny. |

If what I'm reading is correct, Gonzie might be the best of a bad lot. The religious right is already saying that he is too liberal, and that's a point in his favor, if not pretty, damn' good endorsment. O'course, they want the reencarnation of Cotton Mather on the bench so that we can get on with the heresy and witchcraft trials as soon as possible..

Man, f...that's pretty sad. If Gonzie's the best, we're headed into a long period of very bad decisions. But, as much as I hate to admit it, I think you're right--Al may be the best we can hope for. Plus, with the rumors flying about Renquist's possible retirement, and the Chimp's affection for Al, can you say Cheif Justice Gonzie? |

Well, and now with an extra seat open... he can appoint Condie to, yet, another job she's not suited for. |

One thing about O'Connor's resignation letter that made me feel better is that her resignation is to take effect on the confirmation of her successor. Sounds to me like she is trying her level best to prevent it being some sort of right wing "activist" judge. |

I had a chance to talk today with a lawyer who used be to the Attorney General for some state or other (I forget which one). I asked him what he thought about the SCOTUS vacancy, and he said that he thinks we are now looking at a record-setting "shortest tenure as Attorney General of the United States." |

My two biggest concerns here are Bush is so easily manipulated and that he is so incompetent. Clearly his legacy is going to suck even more now. What a mess. |

Wouldn't this be a good time for Impeachment hearings? I mean, the POTUS did start a war with cooked "evidence" - no doubt can exist any longer. Then there's the outing of Valerie Plame, can't this be traced further up the ladder? I mean, geez, when the republicans were a minority, they went after Clinton's sad little intercourse-free "affair". What's taking so long? |
