I was going to put this in a different thread, but then realized I had no real relevant point to make. But, I typed it all out, anyway:
One of my two local public radio stations for the main NPR news programs (Morning Edition and All Things Considered), WETA, just recently switched to an all-classical-music format, with the exception of the 7 PM hour, during which one may hear The Jim Lehrer News Hour (produced in WETA studios).
WETA had been playing the two NPR programs for as long as I can remember, but in February last year, switched to a mostly international-news format, with lots more NPR, PRI and BBC news shows replacing all the classical music they used to play during non-drive times. Now they've gone the extreme opposite, only using NPR's top-of-the-hour, five-minute news summaries.
WAMU is now the only radio station in the D.C. area offering NPR's flagship programs. And it's little wonder. WAMU is right now in a pledge-drive week, and to try to boost pledging, they make no secret that they have to pay $732 for every hour of NPR programming they air. Not only that, but the fee is based upon the number of listeners, so WETA dropping the programs means that WAMU is going to get a lot more listeners, so the fees will increase. I'm sure that most smaller public radio stations simply can't afford to pay NPR's fees.
I do wonder wether WETA's statements that they switched to all-classical in order to get back to their Washington D.C. Arts roots are really the whole story, or if maybe the trustees decided that they could no longer afford all the news programming. Judging by some of the comments on WETA's blog, many listeners are very happy to see classical music return to the station (so much so that one even implied she'd like to see the end of Lehrer's talk show - five measely hours per week), but blog commenters are self-selected and not a good sample. |

Does the $732 dollar's an hour apply to shows that other NPR stations produce? For example, do they have to pay that much for The Prairie Home Companion or Car Talk? It certainly can't apply to locally produced shows, which our best NPR station, KCRW does a lot of. |

It's funny you should mention Prairie Home Companion, because WETA was the one station that carried it, and now, just as they've dumped it for classical music, WAMU has picked it up.
I do remember, though, that 15 years ago, during another pledge drive on WETA, they mentioned that Prairie Home Companion cost them $18,000 per quarter to broadcast. That would typically mean twelve two-hour shows and their repeats the next days, for about $750 per hour for that show alone, slightly more than WAMU is paying for All Things Considered today. I don't imagine that inflation has made Prairie cheaper over the years, either.
By the way, WAMU is airing Car Talk on Saturdays at 10 AM, though I've got no clue at all how much they're paying for it.
Most of Sunday on WAMU is locally-produced programming, as is the four hours (plus repeats) taken up between the Diane Rehm and Kojo Nnamdi shows every weekday. How much those two - and their staff - get paid is anyone's guess, but one would think that Diane's show is actually an income generator for WAMU, since while it's produced locally, it is distributed by NPR, NPR International, and Sirius. Just like Studio 360 is a cash cow for WNYC, and Car Talk is for WBUR. |

I posted "The Greatest Scam Ever Prebunked" (tract parody) two days ago, and not a peep outta anyone. I'm beginning to think I've lost whatever touch I had. Four long days of work on that, and all I know about people reactions is nothing.
I can see how people lost interest in the movie posters. I really ran those into the ground. But this was only my third Chick parody, and I think my second-best. Each has been very different from the others. In my mind, "Scam" was a yuk a minute laugh factory. But every baby's beautiful to its mother, and I own to subjective bias.
Don't know what to think. Plus, it's depressing.

Re Car Talk, it was my understanding that Car Talk was one of NPR's most expensive programs.
I'm surprised that in the NoVa area that only WAMU gives regular NPR programming. And while in Baltimore I get their local WYPR and DC's WAMU, I doubt that you all get WYPR down there. |

Thanks, Cune. Sometimes it's not easy to see that. BTW, I've a new dialog bubble to the next-to-last image in that son-of-Randi saga.

Heard a good one today while my kid had the TV tuned to Power Rangers: would you rather have sausages for fingers, or would you prefer to sweat mayonnaise?
Because I type so much, I would have to go with the mayo. |

That's a tough one. At least once you've dealt with the fat fingers, you've dealt with it, be it with extra prosthetics, huge keyboards or just training.
The mayo, however, would be the gift that keeps on giving. More importantly though, it'd be the gift that keeps on smelling.
The lovely false dichotomy that it is, I think I may have to go with the sausage fingers. |
John's just this guy, you know. |

Lots and lots of cannons and extra lives. Spending all wood on interest-rate hikes.
Selling off cannons you know aren't going to be used anymore before a level ends is a good thing, too. |
