A woman managed to scam a million dollars out of 22 different people with this story...

quote:
She claimed to be a CIA agent who could have satellites scan people's bodies for disease, then have CIA agents administer secret medicines to them while they slept.

Replace the CIA with God in the story and you basically have the same scam going on in religion. The only difference is that there is proof the CIA exists.

If it does exist, the CIA certainly doesn't have all those powers, though. Or they'd know where to target Osama and Al-Zawahiri. If those satellites can heal, it stands to reason they could kill.

Oh, but HalfMooner, the CIA does have powers. Remember that they did all those Remote Viewing experiments? They know where Osama is. They're just acting real casual about it. You know....sort of sneak up on him.

She scammed "22 neighbors, in-laws and friends". So basically she lied to and fucked over people who loved and trusted her.

I think prison might not be the worst of this person's problems.

Even as a joke, that comparison only works for things like indulgences and televangelists. Most people who contribute money to a religious institution intend and know that is goes toward maintaining the building, paying the staff, and charitable work they agree with. Sort of the same as when I pay my local Humanist group's membership dues.

It's how quite a few scammers work. Become friends with someone, gain their trust and then milk them.

Speaking of scams....

I heard on NPR that people are calling families in Mexico claiming to be a relavtive in the US illegally (using cold reading to find out the relative's name) and saying that they are coming back home in a little while, then the scammers call back and pretend to be a US Immigration official and say that the relative is in jail and won't be released until money is exchanged...

Todays proof, 5/9/07

From News of the Weird,

The Scandia Family Fun Center, which operates a super thrill ride (168 feet high, spinning at 60 miles an hour, pulling 3.5 g's) called the Screamer, in Sacramento, Calif., decided in March that because of neighborhood residents' noise complaints, riders would be prohibited from screaming (and subject to ejection from the park). Oh yeah, our species has had the radish. We're way too stupid to have any further, evolutionary survival prospects.

Every once in a while I see a ray of hope, but then, I go to the Darwin Awards and dash that lying bastard to pieces.

The good news is, the plot from Moonraker is still an option.
