This thread is for letting everyone know about great music that others probably wont find on their own...
In other words, dont recommend Dark Side of the Moon, Google can do that.

Also, only give up the best of the best, I dont want any of this "well it has 2 really great songs on it" crap.

Heres a few,

Ethiopiques 4
A collection of songs by Mulatu Astatqe, Ethiopias Godfather of Jazz
I would classify this music as "60's Euro-hipster Jazz" and boy does it kick ass.

Si, Para Usted, Vol 1: Funky beats from revolutionary Cuba.
Top notch island jazz with a distinctly funky feeling.

The Funky 16 Corners,
This is a collection of horn-heavy funk by rarely recorded funk bands from the early 70's. This is no Parliament bullshit funk, anyone who thinks Parliament is great funk dont know jack. I like to say "Parliament put Funk on the the world's map, thus insuring that no one would ever go there again."

Edit-to add that to my sig, sorry Dave, it was a good run.

Anything by Yma Sumac!

3 (count em': Three!) octave voice -- some say four or five, but my poor ear isn't up to the task of finding them all.

I have only now discovered that her music is available at Amazon.com. I'm waiting on some of her albums as we speak.

What style of music is that Filthy? Is it closer to Judas Priest or Celine Dion?

I guess I'll add the JB's since nobody I know has even heard of them. (Which is criminal)

The JB's Anthology,
The JB's (AKA, Fred Wesley and the JB's, AKA Maceo and the Macks.)
are quite simply the best funk band ever.
This is a wonderful anthology, though it lacks the song 'Blow your head' which is a must for any Ipod or Podesque device.

Um, good question. Could be called folk or even light classical. In all truth, I don't know. Here's her Amazon page. It might explain her better than I could.

Edit: There are brief sound clips from each of her alblums at the page. Worth a listen.

Back in the '50s, popular music was as bland and dull as a Republican convention -- Itsy Bitsy Bikinis and Wake Up Suzie; that sort of tripe. Except for a few stations advertizing Royal Crown Stick Pomade and featuring Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Bo-Diddly and Little Richard, et al., it sucked. Then Yma came along. She wasn't rock-star popular and never sold all that many records, but she attracted a dedicated, cult following that included myself, and apparently, still lives today. As far as I know, every concert she ever performed was sold out.

Lemmee add Buffy St. Marie to the list. Great music, but too controversial to have become tremendously popular.

Robbie Fulks - 13 Hillbilly Giants (Great songs you don't heard on the radio.)

Richard March - Levee Road
(I like the song "Libraries" which has the words: "They're clos'n all the libraries, ya got Wal-Mart, don't complain.")

Tinariwen – (Fantastic Malian band. Actual rebels who put down their guns and picked up guitars.)

Sounds of a Bygone Era – Vol. 2 - Romanica Puceanu and the Gore Brothers
Label: Asphalt Tango LC12494 (Worth looking for.)

Stan Rogers: Northwest Passage and Foggerty's Cove.

Most if not all of the music I like is obscure.

Pere Ubu played Experimental Rock. They were a great band. And very influencial.

Urubamba Played Peruvian and South American folk music. Influential. They were the backup band to Paul Simons “El Condor Pasa”. (Actually, I think he just rewrote the lyrics…)

Son House played Delta Blues. Influenced people like Robert Johnson no less. Crazy as a loon, and I mean really, but hey, I am still trying to figure out how he got that sound. His bottlenecking was understated and awesome.

Jimmy Rodgers Early Country Music. So early, it wasn't even called country music. In fact, so early, he was really inventing the form. Often called “The Yodeling Brakeman” he was, again, a major influence on both country and rock. (And no, this aint the guy who sang “Honeycomb”. “Mule Skinner Blues” was his though…

Lonnie Johnson played jazz and blues guitar. Often credited as the first single note soloist, as in playing lead guitar. Influenced Django Reinhardt and, well, every other lead guitar player whether they know it or not. Reinhardt and Johnson were so close in style that sometimes I can't really tell who is playing. Frankly, I think the reason Reinhardt is more famous is because he was white.

Combustible Edison. Lounge Music so well done, so, ummmmm… Put it like this, if I were to make a movie, I would want their music to be playing over the opening credits…

Well, I could probably go on for days. Maybe I will. But I'll stop here for now…

Edited to add:

Oh, by the way, I also love Yma Sumac. Good pick filthy!

Twisted Sister's Stay Hungry album

We're not gonna take this recommendation, sorry.

I listened to their samples and it sounds great, right up my alley... However the Impossible Worlds samples sounded more like the theme music to some bizarre hillbilly carnival in the Twilight Zone.

Hey, I thought this thread was for more obscure music...

Anonymous Four -- a'capela chants and gospel much of it from the middle ages. Lovely stuff. Also Ladysmith Black Mambozo. Jimmy Driftwood is a longtime favorite of mine, as is Mississippi John Hurt.

Shaman for Finnish folk metal. Well, I don't know how obscure they are; I'd never heard of them until I tried finding songs from Shaman (Brazilian metal band) and instead found the Finnish Shaman. Oops. I like the Finnish one better, though.

Well, doesn't "obscure" mean that people don't like it? Which means it can't be good, or people would like it. So, by definition, If you're a people, you don't like it because it's not what people like.

Steve Earle isn't exactly obscure, but he's not a pop star at the moment. I like The Revolution Starts Now.

Well Im glad thats not the definition of obscure, because that would mean Nelly and Britney Spears make good music. Shudder.
