It is said that Leona Boyd is the First Lady of the Classical Guitar, but I think Sharon Isbin is just a tad better.

…as is Mississippi John Hurt
.

You know, some of this comes down to what interests you I suppose. I don't think of Mississipi John Hurt as particularly obscure because he was such a major influence on my own finger picking style. He, along with Robert Johnson and Reverend Gary Davis are so much a part of my own picking vocabulary that they don't feel obscure to me at all. But I guess they are if Eric Clapton is the first person that jumps to mind in a conversation about blues music. (And no, I am no knocking Clapton. If it weren't for those blues guys from England, I doubt that masters like
B.B. King or Muddy Waters or even Robert Johnson would have ever been as widely known as they are.)

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

I am a little late into this but I liked this album, it's sort of a odd drug induced rock sound. It is really quite good.

Here's my review of Kil's reccomendation, Combustible Edison.

First let me say that I judge music first on this criteria: Do I really want to listen to this song again? If a song makes that major hurdle, then it is put in two categories: Ipod worthy or DJ worthy, aka something I would play for others at a party...my highest reccomendation.

Album Name: I, Swinger, 12 songs
DJ Worthy songs,
Cadillac: I'm a sucker for xylophones, far to short though. This song is very swingy.

The Millionaire's Holiday: This song makes me think of Sponge Bob Squarepants trying to act cool or of a bar with a pool wall that has chicks swimming in it.. Another short song...

Spy vs. Spy: Better length, my favorite on the disk, sounds like Dick Dale meets Pee-wee Herman. The second part of the song really kicks with the harpsicord, really it should be its own song.

Ipod worthy songs,
Impact!: West Side Story rumble meets the Pink Panther...

Conclusion: While most of the songs are too slow or not technically difficult enough for my taste, this disk is still above average. I'd give a buy reccomendation for anyone who digs swing/loungesque music.

Hurt influenced a lot of musicians, not the least of them, Bonnie Raite. I always wanted to learn an insturment, but, I guess, I never wanted to badly enough. And I couldn't carry a tune with a bucket-loader, anyway.

Leo Kottke is another obscure/non-obsecure musician I like a lot. Another is Rosetta Breeze a (very obscure), local black gospel singer and pianist.

Hurt influnced a lot of people, not the least of them, Bonnie Raite. If I played, he'd have certainly have influnced me. But sadly, he never achieved much notice amongst the general public.

John Cassel is an old aquantence of mine and he's very good as well as obscure. Plays keyboards and sings around northern VT and Montreal.

Okay, I'm going to go country on ya-all… Some great guitar players who most of you have never heard of, I'm guessing.

Doc Watson is possibly the best flat picker alive. Nuff said.

This is for filthy.

Doc Watson and Leo Kottke

Chet Atkins was a simply awesome finger picker. They don't get better.

For your consideration:

Chet Atkins

And Doc and Chet together:

Doc Watson and Chet Atkins

Of course, it just wouldn't be right to mention those guys without giving a listen to Merl Travis, who influenced both Doc and Chet.

Merl Travis composed one of my favorite songs, Dark as a Dungeon, but I couldn't find a clip of Travis playing it. Darn!

While were at it, and not exactly country. Country blues?

Reverend Gary Davis

And another for filthy.

Mississipi John Hurt

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why don't we do it in the road?

The Beatles

(white album) side 2 (of 4), track 7

What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires -- desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell

Kil, they might come better than Doc, but those are few and far between. I might propose the immortal Woody Guthrie as in the running with him. And, of course, Doc (and everybody else) does a lot of Woody's stuff. My own favorite is his Mean Talkin' Blues.

I've wondered what became of Bobbie Gentry and at last have an excuse to look her up. She went from scure to obscure in less time than it takes to tell it, it seemed. She was never a favorite of mine, but was easy to listen to never the less.

If you like great a'capela, dig the Anonymous four.

Never heard of 'em,

Though I want to reccomend Michael Jackson's Thriller. A little known LP.
