Damn Gorgo, it's become all but circular and stessful to my attention span. But carry on, carry on; I don't have to like it, do I?

Yeah, well, I'll tell you what. Let's say it's all my fault, and i don't know how to communicate, and and it isn't circular because Martha isn't really deluding herself with false ideas about literary tools.
People are very capable of ignoring me, and in fact, I think some may be, though it's hard for me to believe that people aren't hanging on my every word about everything.
If you get nothing more out of this than the idea I'm trying to figure some things out about myself and about you all, and if I'm retarded, well, at least I'm trying to be harmless, then I'll be pleased.
And I am already pleased, because I think I get a little bit of where a couple of people at least think they're coming from, even if they're deluding themselves, and I think that's important.
If you don't get that much, then all I can say is that I wish I was better at pleasing everyone, but I guess I only please those people all the time that know me personally.
It's certainly not like those threads where Creationists come in and no one ever repeats themselves for no apparent reason now is it? |

My position is that I've seen this argument again and again. It follows a typical pattern.
Gorgo asks a question which seems to indicate that he is gearing up to pull the offended bit again.
Marf or someone else responds in a brusk or combative nature.
Gorgo responds by being offended

Futhermore, anyone who gives a rat's ass about pleasing everybody is deluded at best and an idiot at worst. It can't be done and this would be a sad and sorry world if it could.

Well you sure don't seem to be trying to understand people here, Gorgo. One thing you are doing is making outright claims, so far wholly unevidenced, as to their motivations. And when these people clearly explain their motivations, you seem to completely ignore them and go back to insisting that you know better.
So how about you put up or shut up. You've inferred, implied, and flat out claimed that the reason people use some of the language that you have judged to be inappropriate is because they lack self respect. Prove it. Demonstrate that you're qualified to do some kind of psychological profile on anyone here, or that you've spoken with or read an assessment by someone who is, or that you have some other valid means to determine what you deem to be their true motivation. Psychic, perhaps? Oh, and please provide references of course.

That's because Jerome was projecting. He had no shortage of motivations to hand out to other people, everything from Soviet brainwashing to science as a religion. He obviously felt no shame in ascribing motives to other peoples' statements, and obviously had no regard for whether his guesses were true or not. And when called on it, he would play the victim.
Note well that no place in the above do I offer any hypothetical motivators for Jerome's behavior. |

Since you are a rather ineffectual communicator, I'll try to make this as simple as I can: Yes or no, are you going to support your claim about these people's motivations? You see, as marfknox already mentioned, when you state in no uncertain terms that someone's motivations are other than what they claim, you are calling them a liar. And if you are calling us liars while being unwilling to support that assertion, aren't you just being an asshole? (Remember, I already asked if you could offer a better word for "asshole" than "asshole". You declined to answer, so we're left with that.)

Gorgo, I do not think GeeMack is afraid, and thus, I doubt you “understand” his “fear”. Either I am completely misunderstanding what you write, or you are projecting your own perceptions on us.
I do not consider this to be a philosophical discussion. Let me summarize: You made a false psychological analysis of my motivations for calling Jerome a “fucking moron”. I explained my motivations. You rejected that explanation and persist in calling me “deluded” and lacking in self respect.
You say this isn't about being nice, but then you repeatedly call me and Dude and others “rude” – a reference to etiquette, not philosophy. I don't think Dude would deny this he is often rude, and neither will I. In fact, I think both of us and many others here would argue that rudeness has its proper place in certain context, such as the “Rude Pundit” column that Humbert mentioned. But you insist that rude behavior exhibited on this forum is evident of delusional thinking about reality, and then you provide nothing to support this claim that nobody here agrees with you about. Until you have something to back up your claims, bug off.
