I suspect the present Iranian regime is up to no good. Spreading their power regionally by arming and financing Shi'ia militias, including terrorists, and probably trying to build nuclear weapons.
But if I'm right about those things, the proper approach would more resemble the long-term Cold War "containment" strategy, which included a lot of very careful carrot-and-stick diplomacy, than the saber-rattling Bush has been doing. But clearly, the Bushies are probably too dumb to be able to pull off something so elegant, even if they wanted to. The Europeans are desperately trying to fill the diplomatic void. I hope they succeed, and hope Bush doesn't sabotage their work.
