In Alabama, teaching abstinence-only "health education" in high schools seems to be showing results. But not good results for our species:Last year in Mobile County, 4,629 new cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis were reported -- enough instances of the sexually transmitted diseases to account for one out of every 87 people, according to a Press-Register review of state and federal statistics.
That was about three times the rate in New York City and more than twice as high as Washington, D.C.
. . .
In Alabama public schools, students are taught abstinence-based sex education as part of a half credit of health education in high school. Students learn that "abstinence is the only protection against pregnancy, HIV/AIDs and STDs," said state Department of Education spokeswoman Edith Parten. The subject of condoms, under the state course of study guidelines, is not broached, she said. | [My emphasis.]

Abstinence per se works just fine; it's the teaching of it in place of actual education that is the problem.
I think that for every dose of of the clap, et al. and every teen pregnancy, an Alabama fundie supporting such shit should get to pay for the treatments and/or child support. That would put a stop to it.

Yep, saw that in the Sunday paper here in Mobile.
We're finally better than New York City at something!
For the record I am not the one out of the 87 people. |

| The two, I'm told by reliable sources, have been known to converge.

Abstinence works, there's no way it can't work.
Abstinence programs, however, do not work, especially if they are combined with suppression of information about condoms. |
