Venezuela's Chavez May Take Over Schools

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez threatened on Monday to close or take over any private school that refuses to submit to the oversight of his socialist government as it develops a new curriculum and textbooks.

Funny how Ahmadinejad, Chavez and Bush all seem to have the same tendencies, whatever they call themselves.

Most here will only see your irony through politically colored glasses.

What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires -- desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell

Him and Putin can trade notes and definitions for how evil America is, how great they are, and what a great person Stalin was.

YO: OI...this is OY! Your line above this post about Putin and Chavez trading thoughts leaves one person out of the trifecta:
George Wanker Bush, the missing fink in a totalitarian trio. (Darn that typo in his middle name, anyway. Sorry.)

Orwellingly Yurz, OY!

I am not sure that you understand that the figure head is nothing more than the current tool. The next figure head from the opposing party will be used in the same manner with the favor of those that opposed the former.

Same coin. Different sides (heads/tails). Same purpose.

In most cases I agree with this, Jerome. And specially in this case.

Chavez might do some odd things, but please don't liken a popular president, like Chavez, who seems to be helping to improve the lives of Venezuelans, with a criminal like George Bush. There is no comparison.

Every society brainwashes its citizens. If you think yours doesn't, I'd like to know where that is.

Gorgo, you're right there is no comparison. Bush is gone in 2009. Chavez will be like the energizer bunny tyrant. First he did this in 1999 and then he did this. Since you are favorable to him, can you explain why he'd want to change the Constitution to empower himself not limit himself? He got the Enabling Act passed when there was no opposition party to oppose him (They did boycott it). It should only cover this. What is to prevent it from becoming like this event in history?

You tell me can we trust a man with that much power? We don't trust Bush and our Congress is beginning to grow a pair. But who in Venezuela will hold Chavez in check and will he listen or brand them as agents of the US.

I am willing to grant you that he might be a good man with good intentions. But his first grab to power was a Putsch. So I am SKEPTICAL of his intentions.

Maybe he'll become the Latin American Robespierre, but he lost his head in the end.

Tyrant? I'm not sure where you see evidence of that, except of course in the corporate media. Has Chavez attacked Haiti, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yugoslavia, Iran, Vietnam and Venezuela?

Did he send people to Guantanamo, and secret CIA prisons?

You have mischaracterized what's going on in the world for sure.

Are those the requirements for being a tyrant?

A U.S. Senator watching police tazer a college student for asking an uncomfortable question would be tyranny.

First off, just so we're clear: it's taser. Secondly, while you're definition is a bit questionable, it's a good thing that hasn't happened!

Which one of the many things you quoted is the "good thing that hasn't happened"?

Why are you so obtuse? In any case, I'm obviously referring to your example of a "U.S. Senator watching police tazer a college student for asking an uncomfortable question" as something that hasn't happened. I think you noted your agreement here.

I'm asking two questions in one. What makes him a tyrant, and what makes him the same as George Bush, or even Bill Clinton?

He may be an opportunist, and he may, once he has more power, become a tyrant, but what makes him a tyrant now? What puts him in the same league with criminals like George Bush and Bill Clinton?
