A growing minority of Muslim med students in Britain are letting Islamic fanaticism destroy their chances to become physicians. From The Times: Some Muslim medical students are refusing to attend lectures or answer exam questions on alcohol-related or sexually transmitted diseases because they claim it offends their religious beliefs.
Some trainee doctors say learning to treat the diseases conflicts with their faith, which states that Muslims should not drink alcohol and rejects sexual promiscuity.
A small number of Muslim medical students have even refused to treat patients of the opposite sex. One male student was prepared to fail his final exams rather than carry out a basic examination of a female patient.
The religious objections by students have been confirmed by the British Medical Association (BMA) and General Medical Council (GMC), which both stressed that they did not approve of such actions.

Shazia Ovaisi, a GP in north London, said one of her male Muslim contemporaries at medical school failed to complete his training because he refused to examine a woman patient as part of his final exams.
“He was academically gifted, one of the best students, but gradually he got in with certain Islamic groups and started to become more radical,” said Ovaisi.
“You could see there was a change in his personality as time went by. During the final exams he was supposed to treat a female patient in hospital. He refused to do it, even though it would have been a very basic examination, nothing intrusive.
“But he refused and as a result he failed his exams. I was quite shocked and disappointed about it because I don't see there being anything in our religion that prohibits us from examining male and female patients.” |

I totally agree. Like with the Muslim med students who wouldn't take evolution that we discussed a few months back, there should be no compromising basic science and good medicine. They wanna flunk, that's their decision. They can always get a reference from their mullahs to become human bombs. (I'm sure their spiritual advisers have the right connections.) That job requires no nastiness like having to examine females or alcoholics, or to treat STDs.
These guys are so much like our own fundies!

Nuts. Just nuts.
Muslims shouldn't drink alcohol so I'm not going to study it's affects on anyone. Why? Because there can't be alchol related illness in Talibanistan - they'll either not drink or be killed. Ok.
Same with STDs. Infidelity of any kind, even rape, ends in the death of the evil woman involved, so there shouldn't be any. And without infidelity, there is no STD. Ok.
And women? Women arn't allowed to be educated and male Doctors refuse to even examine sick or injured women, let alone treat them, so when they get ill they are on their own - get better yourself or die, mam. Alright.
Sure cuts down on health care costs, I guess...  |

Is it unfair to regard a culture that operates under these rules as 'primitive?' Shouldn't any modern civilization treat the females with the same consideration as the males, and if a civilization refuses to do that, significantly disenfranchising one sex, is therfore 'backward.' Or am I being a cultural-centric? |

Quite.
I've seen reports over here that school students (mainly, but not exclusively Muslims) have been failing science exams because of a refusal to accept evolution.
And our government wants more faith schools... |

The worst, seems to me, is some women who are affected by this, yet embrace it.
Example: In iran there are many women who try to fight (whichever way the can without being killed) to change the tradition of the veil. And then in Europe there are some iranian women who fight to continue this tradition.
I know that part of the deal in Europe is that they feel the need to keep their identity so they´ll preserve the good and the bad. Still, it seems crazy. |
