Agreein' with Doc. And it's not just Islam; some of our Christian sects are little better when they start taking the Bible super-seriously.

That one reminds me of the infamous death of the woman in Florida at the hand of Scientology.

But the main thing here is that these Muslim cases go way beyond religious issues. Some people want to be able to practice a profession, but not be held to a reasonable professional standard. My atheism only comes into this in a very minor way, after the fact. Nobody in their right minds should be willing to accept a "professional" who won't even study, much less practice, basics of his or her profession. That's just unsafe. It's also an outrage to whoever's subsidizing that person's education.

These UK Muslims, like the fundy Christian pharmacists in the USA who refuse to fill out certain "immoral " prescriptions, should be told this: Do your whole job, or be denied the privilege of doing any of it. That's fair and even-handed. They have no business imposing their dogma on patients, cherry-picking which parts of their profession they want to study, or making care of the patients dependent upon the patients' obedience to religious rules. (This is one of the reasons I would never recommend anyone to check into a Catholic-run hospital, particularly if that patient were female.)

Though it's a far less critical matter, I think supermarket clerks should not be able to bail out of checking alcoholic beverages on religious grounds, putting extra work on their fellows. That's abusive, and likely to be a longterm source of ethnic resentment. As with physicians, such workers should have a choice on matters of "conscience" to them, but that choice must be made made prior to choosing their professions, not on the job.
