Priceless

A man who believed he bore the biblical "mark of the beast" used a circular saw to cut off one hand, then he cooked it in the microwave and called 911, authorities said.

The man, in his mid-20s, was calm when Kootenai County sheriff's deputies arrived Saturday. He was in protective custody in the mental health unit of Kootenai Medical Center.

My psychic powers predict a Darwin Honorable mention.

From the article:
The Book of Revelation in the New Testament contains a passage in which an angel is quoted as saying: "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, he, too, will drink the wine of God's fury."

The book of Matthew also contains the passage: "And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for you whole body to do into hell."
At least the poor fellow used sound scriptural reasoning. So much for taking that stuff literally and as inerrant.

I'm just not so sure about using the Microwave. There is no scripture reference to irradiating the offending appendage.

Also, why is he in a mental health facility? That is religious persecution! Evil!!!!!!1!!!!

I live in Coeur D'Alene. Hayden is a suburb. This guy is almost a neighbor. There are more fundies up here than potatoes! One of my neighbors belongs to a "Hunters for Christ" group. Yep, they go out and blast all the wildlife in reverence of Jesus. Sort of an animal sacrifice, I guess. Great bunch of Northern Lights up here!

Even the dogcatcher is a Republican. A few years ago it was skinhead central. All, in all, a wonderful nesting spot for a ranting liberal atheist, but the scenery and lake and resort atmosphere are wonderful!

You all have got to admit though, that's devotion. Stupidity, but devout stupidity.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Yeah, sounds like pure joy. How much does your security system cost you?

Years ago I lived in Phoenix Arizona (when it was a small city, believe it or not,) and there was a fundie group on local UHF "Christian TV" back then called "Clowns for Christ". They would appear on wacky religious shows in makeup and yell "You're a clown!" That didn't set to well with more dignified ministers. There was also (I kid you not) a bunch of nitwits called "Weight Lifters for Jesus" - they would hoist weights above their heads and before letting go, spout off some Bible quote. I recall they had body stockings over all but their hands and heads lest you see any bare flesh. This is all true.

At least the guy with no hand can't use it now to vote for Huckabee if it comes to that!

I noticed the other day at my work there is a notice: Christian Women's Car Pool, not sure if they discriminate or just try to convert. Maybe its a car radio preference thing.

But he didn't. He only cut it off and cooked it. He didn't discard it.

Too bad he didn't see the mark on his forehead. That would have saved our already strapped medical care industry a few bucks. Moron.

Note, that said, if you consider Faith a virtue, this guy's got some virtue. Gotta give credit for walking the talk or whatever. Naw, he's a moron. Or crazy.

Fr. Leo Booth notes that Yeshua overstated his case and one must view the hard sayings as metaphors. Now the latter's reference to cut out ones eyes is not literal. Now doubling the robbers' take is not overstatement but goofiness! The metaphor is to redouble ones faith when God does not answer prayers and lets such as the Holocaust happen! How even errantists have that shield of faith that keeps them from seeing things as we naturalists so do. John HIck and Bishop John Shelby Spong know that natural theology is nonsense and the Buy-bull is treacherous but their shield keeps them bowing to their imaginary Sky Pappy!
That poor man is indeed nuts. Theists cannot see that they and he are both deluded by that shield. God need not apply to tell us how to live! Actually, it is the ignorant men of yore speaking for Him.

Fr. Griggs rests in his Socratic ignorance and humble naturalism. Logic is the bane of theists.Religion is mythinformation. Reason saves, not a dead Galilean fanatic.
