I've started hearing all sorts of dumbass things about businesses no longer selling French fries because the French dare to have a policy that contradicts the USA's so I wonder if it's time for peace-loving Americans to boldy proclaim that they will gladly buy super sized french fry portions, happily consume their fresh and flaky croissants and round it off with a baguette with cheese and some cabernet-sauvignon. This will mean less room for that all beef patty(lips, spleen and hair), Budweiser beer, Wonder bread and American cheese. I have to ask myself if this deprivation will be all that bad.

Some boycotts are just inane. Are the French supposed to be offended that we're no longer eating "French" fries (made in the OreIda factory in Illinois or wherever, no doubt) or that we're calling them something else (I saw "Freedom Fries" on CNN)? Do they even know we're doing this? Do they even care?

A pile of crap.

It is said that patriotism is the final refuge of a scoundrel. I believe that it was either Ambrose Bierce or Mark twain who maintained that it is the first. I'm inclined to agree.

I think that these are isolated incidences blown all out of proportion by the press. Hah. It looks good enough on the news that one chickenhawk, Tom DeLay, from Congress, wants to ban the imports of French wine and fancy water in bottles.

Foolishness, but many applaud it. I fear for the future of my country.

That was really my point. French fries are American. Not only that but last time I checked we were not at war with France. France is our ally fer Chissakes! These people starting these boycotts have to be some of the bigest idiots ever. This is like boycotting the British in WWII because they didn't prefer our war plan. A lot of people need to wake up and think for themselves. Oh man, what the hell am I asking...

French food, real French food is disgusting. You couldn't pay me to eat it. I don't drink wine and try not to buy Amreican made products because they are crapy. I've been boycotting the USPO since they raised the price of the 5 cent stamp. (Although I admit there are times one can't not send certain communications, unfortunatly) Other than that, I think I'm covered, no matter who we are supposed to be against. OK?

I usually avoid buying French products, not for this silly reason of course, but because of their foreign and trade policies.
(Well, cocnac, calvados, Alsace wines... ... I'm not religious about it.)

I hope you don't think that F opposes US & UK because of some love of peace. They have nothing to gain from this conflict, so of course they oppose it.
France always chooses the side where there is most to gain whether this is power or money. (A secondary motive might be to annoy the britts.)
Why do you think they invite despot Robert Mugabe but refuse entry to the democratically elected Chen Shui-bian?

My view of France is much like my view of the USA. A land and a people that can be charming and have a lot of good things to offer, but oh boy they can be annoying!

Starman, annoying isn't the 1/2 of it. Americans (many or them anyway) are just plain stupid. Again I say, I have to live with them! Damn.

Boycotting French products...haha!

I've heard it all now. If you Americans carry on like this then you wont be eating the products of any country apart from your own and those from Britain.

.....and us Brits are getting sick and tired of Blair acting like a puppet to Bush anyway....so soon enough, with any luck, you'll only have your own products to eat ...lol

These silly people - Boycott France? Huh! I fart in their general direction!

The French government can be just as self-serving as anyone, but the people are often quite fine, and get a bad rap. Give them a chance. Personally, what idiot would boycott a face like Audrey Tatou? (Not me!) Or their classics from the past, like Renoir, Debussy, and of course, Bardot! And there's another "dish" (chicken cordon blue) - which I will not boycott! No silly "SUV" fake truck for me! It may not last, but an old Citroen gets better mileage!

The French actually admire American achievements, though they often won't admit it. (They're not dumb enough to think the moon landings were faked, as some Americans do.)

(The French have an old joke about Americans - two American students are walking in a park in Paris, and they see a bust of Voltaire. One says: "Look! Rachmanov!" The other answers: "Yeah! Dat Dat Dat Daaaah!" (Theme from Beethoven's 5th Symphony.)

The French flag has the same colors too - only in the proper order! (Another old French joke, BTW.)

A Frenchman and an American are arguing in a bar, the American says, "OK, so you have all this culture, but we put a man on the moon!" The Frenchman replays: "Of course, but we're going to do you one better! We are going to put a man on the Sun!" (The American isn't drunk enough to buy this, and says: "What, you can't do that! Its too big, too hot, too much radiation, impossible!" Frenchman: "Ah, but we're going to do it....at night!" (French joke about Gallic logic.)

Now I'll have a sip of wine....

You bastard! I just used that line in my own topic, and it took me so long to finish that you beat me to it, thus getting all the credit!

IIRC, the line from Monty Python and the Holy Grail is actually "I break wind in your general direction".

So you still have a chance to be the first to use it in a thread.

was thinking of boycotting American foods , but I do anyway.

Altho', come to think of it, Macdonals do a nice veggie burger.....

Their french fries are 'orrible though.

If you're going to make something resembling a chip, why take all the potato out?. Its just 4 inches of crispy fat.

You cant beat good old fashioned British chips like you get from a Fish and Chip shop.

Ce la vie! (BTW: "Bastard" is a cool word. It always cracks me up. It also somehow makes you sound very British to me, which again brings to mind the famous exchange of insults from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail.")

BTW: In French, "Bastard" is "enfant naturel" - something you probably won't find in the Berlitz French-English dictionary.

and...

(I actually have a French name, so its particularly a chuckle! And not at all "impropre!" ) Merci!

Oh, BTW: French fries have been invented in Belgium.

And I will also bopycott america(n beer). There's a czech beer that is also called Budweiser. From the city of Budweis, you know.
After 10 cans you don't realize anymore that it actually tastes better than the american at all.

P.S.: F***, I just realized that ice cream is french.
