I think that anti-Americanism is a self-fulfilling prophecy:

Most americans are such a xenophobic, unsavory bunch. Their country was born of war and that's all they can think about.

Tsh.

And after that they wonder why no one likes them.

American Students Abroad Told to Pretend to be Canadians
by Steve Giegerich

As anti-war sentiment rises in other countries, U.S. colleges are warning their students studying abroad to avoid demonstrations, street corner debates on U.S. foreign policy and clothes that identify them as Americans.

But just to be on the safe side, some students are passing themselves off as Canadian.

In interviews over the past week, students and faculty overseas said the anti-American sentiment they've encountered has been directed at the Bush administration — not at U.S. citizens.

"As far as being an American in Italy, I don't in any way feel unsafe," said Christopher Bottoni, a junior at Pennsylvania's Villanova University who is studying in Milan.

Back home in New Jersey, Bottoni's father, Lou, is a bit more apprehensive. "Am I worried?" he said. "There's no question about it."

Like many parents with a child overseas, Bottoni stays in touch with his son via cellphone.

That technology, along with e-mail, helps to alleviate the fears of many parents with children overseas, said Carla Slawson, vice-president of the Chicago-based Institute for International Education of Students — a consortium that customizes foreign studies programs for over 125 top colleges and universities, including Villanova's.

Since the start of the war, the institute has received 43 calls from the parents of the 1,200 students it now has studying abroad. Slawson said the parents asked primarily about the institute's evacuation plans.

As war became imminent, Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts directed faculty representatives to severely restrict the activities of the school's 142 students studying in Europe and Australia.

Besides asking students to stay away from demonstrations, the restrictions include cutbacks on independent weekend travel, a curfew and instructions to keep in constant contact with family and friends by cellphone and e-mail. The U.S. State Department also has issued a general warning to all Americans abroad.

"I don't know if we can protect them, but we can make sure that everything is in place to the best of our ability to make sure they're safe and accounted for," said Natalie Mello, Worcester's director of global operations.

"But to be realistic, I can't be sure everybody is safe, even in Worcester."

While the rules enacted by the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University weren't quite as strict, the combined Minnesota schools did suggest another tactic to avoid becoming the target of anti-American rhetoric — one favoured for decades by U.S. students hoping to keep a low profile.

"We told them, if you're travelling or if you're out somewhere for the weekend, tell someone you're Canadian," said Stephen Burmeister-May, the director of international education.

It's becoming more and more pear shaped as this conflict continues. BBC World just reported that America is sending another 100,000 odd troops.....

Holy Shit, it's almost up to 400,000 now....

Not as easy as Herr Rumsfeld thought....

Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.

What it is, we have an administration composed almost entirely of those who legally (pretty borderline in some cases) dodged the service to pursue their own ends. Also, most are Reagan retreads.
Whaddya ecpect? Decency? Courage? Honor......?

If I had not served so long nor loved my country so much, I'd likely move to Canada. I won't because I want to be here to witness, if not assist, in the flushing of these vermin out of our government.

I'm an American, and I'm not xenophobic. Hey there Franc28, so I guess your home country is the perfect place then huh? Nothing bad ever happen there? Oh yeah, and if nobody likes us, then why is our immigration waiting list four years long? Since this is the "Skeptic friends network", why don't you leave your stereotypes and generalizations at the door?

A more crowning achievement in ignorance I have yet to see than the attitude bigots like you display.

It boggles the mind.

I think the problem all around is people generalizing and jumping to conclusions. any country that does not support the US-led war must be anti-American, and therefore Americans must hate them and boycott them.
C'mon - 'freedom fries'?? 'Boycott French wine and cheese'? just because France was gonna use a veto? do you know which country has used the most number of vetoes in the UN Security Council?
3 guesses...

I am living for the day when I order a side of french fries at a resturant, and get told that they don't got 'em. They have only Freedom Fries.

At which time I'll say, "Ok then, gimmie some hash browns."

We Americans excell in assinity. I am no exception.

Most French are rude and smell bad.

Most Muslims are terrorists.

Most Blacks are violent criminals.

Most Jews are greedy and treacherous.

Most Atheists have no morals.

Yes, you're right, it's not bad at all to say these things, as long as I say "most" and not "all"...

By the way, there is Canadians in Iraq and ships in the Gulf. Our PM for some reason doesnt want to admit our involvement.

British Lt.-Col. Ronnie McCourt told CBC in Doha, Qatar, that the Canadians are seeing action with the First U.K. Armoured Division leading the ground offensive in Iraq.

When asked whether Canadians could be wounded or killed, McCourt said, "Oh, yeah, I mean they're in combat. There's always a risk there."

That forced Chretien to admit yesterday that Canadian soldiers could be inside Iraq with coalition forces.

Early next month a Canadian destroyer and frigate will join the three frigates now patrolling the Gulf, boosting Canada's contribution to five war ships and sailors to almost 1,200. Two of those frigates will eventually sail back to their Canadian ports after an undefined transition period.

Canadian Alliance Leader Stephen Harper said he's not interested in the exact location of Canadian troops but finds it inexcusable that the government isn't supporting them.

I wonder if that will prompt American gas stations to stop turning away Canadians at their pumps......

"Most French are rude and smell bad."

France does seem to harbour more rudeness, I suppose (being I went there seven times, I'd know). I don't know about smelling bad.

"Most Muslims are terrorists."

Eh, not really.

"Most Blacks are violent criminals."

There are more "black" criminals than "white", but I wouldn't say "most blacks" are violent criminals.
Not sure what skin colour has to do with anything, though. It always makes me cringe when I see this kind of rationalization.

"Most Jews are greedy and treacherous."

What's wrong about that ? Are you a friggin' socialist ?

"Most Atheists have no morals."

A lot of atheists say they reject morality - in theory. In practice they tend to be the most moral of people. I don't know the reason for this paradox.

Correction. There are a disporportionate number of blacks in prison. Blacks do not commit a greater proportion of crimes than whites. Blacks are simply arrested at a greater rate, when arrested are more likely to be convicted, and when convicted, get harsher sentences.
