Along with being afraid of the US you should thank them. If it was not for the US intervention in the first two great wars you would probably be speaking Russian or German right now. My ancestors are from Sweden and Finland so I'd probably be speaking it as well...remember with some controversial things they do, the world would be worse off if they just sat on their hands. |

I've heard that comment from others as well.
And here I thought the US joined ww2 because the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour. If they hadn't done that, we'd be speaking german.
I should have written "I'm afraid of the current administration", shouldn't I?

I never really gave much thought about America until Dubya and his cronies came into office.
Under Reagan I was still only a teenager and was more concerned about going surfing and drinking booze with my mates.
By the time Bush I came around I thought the first Gulf War was justified. Still discovering the big bad world though.
Clinton to us simple Aussies was a source of amusement.
But this bloke is an absolute nutter, he honestly frightens me. At least under him I have read a lot more about the American system of government, its strengths and its weaknesses.
But as here with our conservative government, there is no one that seems to be able to win the next election no matter how much these leaders distort the truth and treat us like morons.

Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.

Exactly! We Americans oughtta be on our knees kissin' french ass because if it weren't for them frenchies we'd be drinkin' tea every afternoon. All Hail, Lafayette!
Seriously, Fireballin. Is that really a good argument? My neighbor helped me fix my car the other day. I was thankful. Yesterday, he asked me to help him cheat on his taxes. How thankful should I be? |

Fireballn has some odd ideas. It was due to the intervention of US troops in WW I that won the war to end all wars. (So popular, it had a sequel) While other nations significantly aided the effort, the German command said that the single thing that spelled doom for their side was the American Infantry. As for WW II, you can thank the policy of Lend/Lease for helping Russia and England stay in the war until the isolationists dissent evaporated after the Pearl Harbor attack.
Not to say that US administrations are completely benign. Some major faux pases that spring to mind are the invasion of Archangel during the Russian revolution to assist the White Russians, the current invasion of Iraq, and involvement in Vietnam.
Members of the US government have been asking questions over the legality of the Gitmo detainees. They openly question an administration which is so quick to remove basic human rights under the guise of "enemy combatants". This administration I am very afraid of. After 9/11, this adminstration has been manipulating the government to assault basic freedoms granted all people in the US and some guarantees for citizens.
There are too many concerns over the actions of John Ashcroft and the rest of the Hitler Youth. GW has a lot of explaining to do. So far, his arrogance is not endearing.
In short, fear this administration. The citizens of this country do. The government here should be able to limit the damage Georgie does. He's up for re-election next year. |
