They, the geneticists of 2004, are almost already there, even though there is no doubt that the author thought such genetic modifications would not be possible until many hundreds of years futureward. What an irony!

Um, I think you've been smoking too much genetically-modified weed. Today's geneticists (and those of next year) are far, far away from being able to do anything like what they did in that science-fiction tale.

They can't even fix a single-nucleotide genetic mistake without killing the patients, yet. And you think they're only a few years away from a wholesale re-write of someone's genes, while leaving their memories intact?!?

Such modifications are, right now, not possible, and will not be possible for at least a couple hundred years, if ever. If you've got a citation which shows otherwise, I'd be more than interested in reading it.

And as far as the "sop" goes, it's not much of a sop if it's not possible.

P.S. What happened to the "undocumented spoiler code" as documented in the FAQ? It worked for a while then stopped working. Even better question: What happened to the sticky that discussed the undocumented spoiler code? Is I going bonkers?
Well, I've never seen anything like that in the FAQ, nor have I seen a sticky about it, so it must be that GM weed again.

Weed? Who uses weed? Might be some magic 'shrooms, though.

Yo suppose you're right, Dave. Well, you're right sin duda. Still, once they make the critical breakthrough of causing the modification of a 'defective' gene in a patient into the 'proper, correct' version of the gene, something yo thought had already been done for a few 'defects,' then they're on the road to being able to accomplish a species conversion.

As to having memory remain intact, the hypothetical answer to that question depends on whether or not you believe....Do you believe, Dave? Do you have FAITH?....that memory reposes solely in the brain's goop. I don't that.
